Hillary: Won't Back Lieberman if He Loses Primary

Hillary Clinton has released a statement on Joe Lieberman's announcement yesterday that he will petition his way on the November ballot if he loses the primary to Ned Lamont:

''I've known Joe Lieberman for more than thirty years. I have been pleased to support him in his campaign for re-election, and hope that he is our party's nominee,'' the former first lady said in a statement issued by aides. ''But I want to be clear that I will support the nominee chosen by Connecticut Democrats in their primary,'' the New York Democrat added. ''I believe in the Democratic Party, and I believe we must honor the decisions made by Democratic primary voters.''

....''The challenges before us in 2006 call for a strong, united party, in which we all support and work for the candidates who are selected in the Democratic process,'' Clinton said in her statement of Tuesday.

Good for Hillary, sticking with the Democrats. Jane at Firedoglake said yesterday she'd take this position, as I noted in discussing Lieberman's statement here.

More on Hillary: Matt Stoller weighs in.

My thoughts on Hillary's reaching out to the netroots (finally) and the import of the women's vote in 2008 are here.

Oh goody for Hillary. Lets have it both ways. I supported Joe before I didn't support Joe. Can anybody talk straight anymore?

You know, when someone does the right thing, you need to give them some love or they'll say "f*ck you" when you need them next (like Lieberman has done (except nobody alienated Lieberman and he turned into a cowardly turd without any provocation)). Anyway, Hillary proved to be a real Democrat, and we need her as much as she needs us. Otherwise we'll be b*tching about President Frist taking steam baths with Vice President Lieberman in a few years.

Hillary is making a comment on the democratic process here and upon which candidate she supports. Her choice is Lieberman and I think she also has contributed money to Lieberman. She deserves applause for standing up for the democratic principle of the primary, but I cannot figure out why on earth she hopes that Lieberman is the candidate selected after all he has done. If she plans to run for president, I suppose that is a political strategy perhpas seeking not to piss off wealthy and powerful people who always supported Lieberman and would shovel their money her way in a presidential run.

African-American Political Pundit says: "Let's be clear on Mr. Joe Lieberman. Many in the African-American community, like the larger community, feel he has walked like a Republican, talked like a Republican, acted like a Republican, and has voted like a Republican on many key issues, including his continued support of Bush policies in Iraq. The reality is this U.S. Senator is a Republican" I'm surprised he's not running as a Republican.
