Last Day for MapChanger Voting - Help Bill Winter

Today is the last day to vote for your favorite candidate to win Gov. Mark Warner's map changer contest. The winning candidate gets a campaign fundraiser with Gov. Warner.

I recommend Bill Winter of Colorado who will oppose Tom Tancredo. It's really close now, please help. Winter and John Courage are running neck and neck and have joined to ask Gov. Warner to pick them both.

Markos at Daily Kos writes:

Mark Warner's Forward Together PAC is having their own Map Changers election. Today is the last day to vote. The 10 finalists have already won a $5,000 contribution. The winner gets a fundraiser with Gov. Warner, which could be big bucks. Candidates Bill Winter in Colorado and John Courage are running neck and neck for the top spot. Jerry McNerney in California is not too far back, and then there's John Laesch, Jon Tester, Patrick Murphy, Chris Bell, and a few others who could still make gains.

Thank you very much for the support, Ms. Merritt. I really appreciate it! Bill Winter

Mr Winter, What is your plan for controlling the Mexican border? Are you in favor of preventing illegal entry to the U.S.? Obviously, this will be an issue running against Tancredo.

My pleasure Bill. The Colorado netroots community is fully behind you and for good reason. We need a progressive like you and we sure have had enough of Tom Tancredo.

Granola, Bill gave a great answer to that when he was asked it last week in a Kos diary... link

    Thanks.

From the diary linked above, here's Bill in his own words on immigration:
I believe the first step in meaningful immigration reform is to fully enforce the immigration laws we already have. What good will new laws do us when we don't enforce the ones we have? The second step is full funding and support for the Border Patrol, the INS, and ICE. These agencies currently do not have enough money, men, or equipment to do their jobs. The next step is real border security, and that doesn't mean building a wall. Even Tancredo admits a wall won't work. We need to use modern technology and a fully funded Border Patrol. We would be better off with 5,000 more fully trained Border Patrol agents on the border than with 5,000 National Guard troops who are not trained for border enforcement. We need to hold employers accountable for who they hire, but also make it easier for them to obey the law. This means better documentation systems and better systems for enforcing expired visas. And we need a system that doesn't just target immigrants, but targets the root economic reasons why they come here. We need to reform the laws so that both immigrants and employers can and will follow them. And we need to hold Mexico to a higher standard in economic and political development so that people don't feel compelled to leave home to survive in the first place.
If Bill stops back in, I hope he will update this with his position on a path to citizenship for the undocumented who are already in the U.S.

I would say if he did that, it may make him a hero with progressives, but with the people who actually have to decide and are able to vote for him, it may be another matter. It will be interesting to watch. I don't have a dog in the race, but Kos' position pretty much cemented my position...
