White House Salaries Published

The National Journal has published the newly released list of White House salaries. The big guys get $165,000.

In 2003, they made $151,000.

Not on the list: Cheney chief of staff Dave Addington. Why not? His predecessor Scooter Libby was on the 2003 list. [Via Tim Grieves at Salon's War Room.]

He's probably a contractor. You know how they love contractors.

Yet the minimum wage remains the same.

I notice the 'Ethics Advisor' gets over a hundred thou. That's money down the toilet.

i know this will probably put me on the far side, but i really have no problem with those charged with running United States, Inc. being paid decently for it. they are in charge of the world's biggest economy, and most sophisticated military. The company they run makes exxon look like small change by comparison. in fact, i wouldn't have a problem with them being paid even more, you gets what you pays for. all that said, i also expect them to do the job they're getting paid to do. that's where they fall short. congress' primary job is to pass a budget. a complex job to be sure, but one that they all know about up front. yet, every year they act surprised. their second job, not necessarily in importance, is to provide a check against excesses by the executive branch. they don't do such a hot job at that either.

Yeah, those salaries don't seem over the top to me either. Their perks are a helluva lot nicer though.

According to a New Yorker (July 3rd issue) article, Addington is the prime mover in all this "legal reasoning" behind all the felonies the administration is racking up. He's probably getting paid astronomical sums.

It's NOT about the money. It NEVER is with these guys. In fact, I'll bet serious coin that ALL of them took pay cuts to be where they are today. It is only about one thing, the ultimate addiction: power. And god only knows the amazing perks these people have. The perks are probably worth multiples of the salaries, if memory serves.

actually, i suspect their perks pale besides the likes of the ceo's of the fortune 500.

It's not the amount...compared to the private sector it is cheap. It's the raises they give themselves while the lowest earners among us get stiffed year after year after year.

$155k a year pretty low for the top salary. I don't know how DC compares to NYC for rents, but you couldn't afford to rent a 2BR apartment in manhattan on that salary. If any of them are in it for the money, it's not the money they'll make while they're working for the government.

from AMERICAblog White House paying $100,000 salary to "Director of Lessons Learned" by John in DC - 7/12/2006 11:25:00 AM
Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL) offers a few more lessons learned: Mr. Speaker, yesterday the President said we continue to be wise about how we spend the people's money. "Then why are we paying over $100,000 for a 'White House Director of Lessons Learned'? "Maybe I can save the taxpayers $100,000 by running through a few of the lessons this White House should have learned by now. "Lesson 1: When the Army Chief of Staff and the Secretary of State say you are going to war without enough troops, you're going to war without enough troops. "Lesson 2: When 8.8 billion dollars of reconstruction funding disappears from Iraq, and 2 billion dollars disappears from Katrina relief, it's time to demand a little accountability. "Lesson 3: When you've 'turned the corner' in Iraq more times than Danica Patrick at the Indy 500, it means you are going in circles. "Lesson 4: When the national weather service tells you a category 5 hurricane is heading for New Orleans, a category 5 hurricane is heading to New Orleans. "I would also ask the President why we're paying for two 'Ethics Advisors' and a 'Director of Fact Checking.' "They must be the only people in Washington who get more vacation time than the President. "Maybe the White House could consolidate these positions into a Director of Irony."
