Jeb's 19th Execution

The state of Florda executed Arthur Rutherford today. It was the 19th execution performed while Jeb Bush has been Governor. Florida has executed 62 people since the death penalty was restored in 1976.

Rutherford was on the gurney in January when he got a last minute stay from the Supreme Court. For his last meal,

He requested the same meal he had in January: Fried green tomatoes, catfish, fresh water, fried eggplant, sweet tea, and hush puppies (deep-fried cornbread).

He was surrounded by 20 members of his immediate family this morning. He was a handyman and a Vietnam Veteran.

More about his case is here.

Post-traumatic stress disorder, alcohol use, and jitteriness turn someone into a cold-blooded premeditated murderer?  Really?

What a way for society to be; to kill the weakest and those who are ill in its midst instead of caring for them or treating them.  This way, no one has to share the blame of tragedies that occur, we just all point the finger and say, 'It was him.'

With every execution that takes place, society has failed and we are all worse off.  It stops us from analysing what went wrong and therefore stops us from making positive change.

Yes, but that analyzing would require introspection and self-examination, and result in acccepting a share of the responsibility.

And doing all that might result in a conscience that will not let some remain in denial.

Much better to throw it out with the trash so someone else can take it away, or just stick a needle in it to make it go away. It is just an it anyway, not a person.

Add the brother's 152 in Texas-and the military/civilian deaths in Iraq and you have quite the crime syndicate.

    Yep:
I knew it was societies fault all along.  Not his fault he killed someone, Not Foley's fault he emailed the page, not Kennedy's fault he drove under the influence.  Definately societies fault.

Personal responsibility is always a factor, it's just not the only factor, as prosecutors and the state would have us believe.  Maybe we should concentrate more on what we each do to make society better rather than on what other people do to make it worse.  It's not rocket science.

Well said, HK! Multiplying that by a few million people would certainly create an irresistible force. One that we've seen in action from liberals, I think, especially since Katrina.

Executions are an expiatory ritual for the dog    fearin' folk down there: it's a crowd pleaser,    like shock 'n awe and a scourged and bleeding     savior. The Dubya's and Jebs understand this full well.
