Freezing Cold and Snowing Again

The 4th snowstorm in a month has hit Denver, this time with freezing temperatures in the teens and below. I'm really getting tired of this.

If any of you have a suggestion for a destination, anywhere in the world, with:

  • a beach at least 1 mile long, to walk along at dawn and sunset
  • a great spa, hiking, yoga classes, etc.
  • restaurants serving primarily fresh vegetables, fruit and fish, as well as spirits
  • wi-fi to be able to blog while I'm there
  • that doesn't cost an arm and a leg

please let me know in the comments.

Normally, I'd invite you to come visit us here in SoCal. Yesterday it was 85 degrees and sunny here in Santa Monica. And, of course, I think we've got your criteria beat.

But as of tonight we're predicted to have record lows for the next three or four days. Parts of L.A. county may even see freezing rain. How crazy is that?!?

San Diego is currently a mere 54 degrees, and we're looking a city lows in the 30's.  Almost exactly as "warm" as the weather in Boston right now.  Goes any lower and we're gonna lose our home field advantage against the Patriots on Sunday.

"The Sanctuary" on west coast of Costa Rica.
Fly into Liberia, in northwest quadrant, to
avoid having to take ground transport from
    San Jose.

    Luxurious. All-inclusive can be spendy,
but it is so far off the beaten path
that the big corporate honchos use if
to discuss merger talks when they don't
want the stock market to find out.
The pool features a couple of waterfalls
and a truly "wet" bar.  Great 3-star food.

Caveat - it's a long drive from the airport,
and Costa Rica made a conscious decision years
ago to spend their money on social systems,
like universal free health care, instead of on roads.  Plus, with the earthquake activity
up and down the western rim of the country,
there's no point in building lots of big
bridges.  In fact, they abandoned the rail
system in that part of the country for
    the same reason.

Another nice place is up in the clouds,
closer to San Jose, where there are
places that are havens for a huge variety
of hummingbirds.  To avoid the boredom of
more than four straight days on a secluded
beach, you might want to consider a "surf
& turf" kind of thing, where you switch off
to someplace up in the mountains.

Jeralyn, you've described Fredo's home town of Coronado, CA to a tee.  One of the great mile-long beaches in the world, and all the other stuff you need as well.  The Hotel del Coronado is genuinely lovely, but a tad pricey.  There's an excellent Marriott on the island with a great gym and a lap pool that is 80 degrees year-round.  Lemme know if you're coming; Fredo will buy you a drink and regale you with right-wing nuttiness.

jeralyn, but isn't the weather in colorado supposed to be one of the big reasons people live there? let's face it, aside from that, why else bother? assuming, of course, you're big into snow, and freezing your tushy off during the winter.

good luck in your quest for respite. lol

Fredo, are you retired Navy? Either that our you are rich, because those are the only two groups who live on Coronado. I did 3 years at Balboa hospital as a civilian contractor. The staff there was fantastic.

Was home over Christmas Vacation and once again I asked myself why I moved to the midwest (my wife) after growing up in Sunny FL.

Tampa, Orlando, Miami, Ft. Myers, Key West you name it as long as your not in the panhandle or North Florida you will have great weather 98% of the year in terms of now cold.

It's not that expensive and there is no income tax thanks to all the tourists.

    How can you beat that?

Che, I'm not retired navy, although I was a naval officer for a time.  I bought a house here while I was practicing law in L.A., and moved into it after getting married.  Spent a lot of time with a big-time L.A. firm as a bachelor and saved and invested a lot, so I guess I am "rich" by a lot of people's standards, although it doesn't feel like it.  I think the number of retired navy people here is steadily dwindling, as the real estate market has just gone cuckoo.  But God it's a wonderful place to live.  Every time we come across the bridge and look down at our little island we just thank our lucky stars.

...AND the Fruits and Vegetable Capitol (over 122 varieties) of the Philippines, year round summers, no typhoons because of its location, you don't even need a visa, just fly in, get the passport stamped and you're good for months. Fabulous public transportation and it is a well-organized, easy to get around city.

And some of the warmest, most natural, generous, and accommodating people in the world. (I plan to retire there, hopefully by years end.)

Of course, there are drawbacks: broadband speeds are over SIXTEEN TIMES AS FAST as here in the U.S. and the economic base is about 5-6 times cheaper than your average American city - not resort towns.

The drawback is that you have to hop on a plane to get here.

Great suggestions, everyone.  Thanks and please keep them coming.

I'm thinking outside the continental U.S.: Costa Rica, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean/Latin America seems possible, so does Asia (Thailand.)

Neuron, company would be fine, but I'm not crazy about Canyon -- what about Rancho La Puerta, the sister (and cheaper) version of the Golden Door -- no beach though. Or the Iguana Lodge in the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica, great beach, reasonably priced and owned by some former public defenders from Colorado.
