Mudcat's "Populism"

Dave "Mudcat" Saunders is a Democratic political operative who hates "elites." That's why, in his first post at Time's Swampland, he defended Joe Klein's plea for no jail time for Scooter Libby.

This comment captures the mood:

Shorter Mudcat:

"Metropolitan Opera Wing" Democrats are losing the rural vote because they are being too hard on Joe Klein for carrying water for rural hero, Scooter Libby.

I remember a brief conversation with Klein at an event for Jim Webb the night before he was sworn in, and he was planning to have dinner with Mudcat as soon as the event was over.

If so, that may have some impact.

Mudcat was as Ykos2006 in Las Vegas - Steve Jarding was supposed to come but broke a foot and could not travel and Mudcat filled in for him.

Maybe they're trying to tell you something???

however, i suspect that, were i to go to western spotsylvania county, or louisa county, both less than 100 miles south of DC, and both still considered rural, less than 1 or 2 people out of 10 would have a clue who mr. libby is.

further, i submit that all 10 would be surprised to discover that he's a hero to them.

in light of this, i believe it isn't just me. :)

btw, no reasonable person realistically expected a slim democratic majority congress to clean up, overnight, the huge mess created by the white house, and condoned/funded by a republican majority congress.

that train left the station 6 years ago, it's going to take some time to get it stopped.

I think you underestimate the power of satellite...

Your excuse for the Demos is that Bush has been around 6 years? And that is the reason the Demos can't get anything done??

The problem is they would rather do some partisan hacking than something to serve the people.

Feel free to say the Repubs do it too. I won't argue.

It's not just the subtle homophobia; it's his perpetuation of the mistaken belief that there's much we can do about the south.

I hope he takes this back, but I expect he won't.

I see the Demos trashing someone from the South who is trying to tell them how they might have a chance at winning a few states, and a national election..

The truth is that you had rather be, in your own minds, righteously right. That is the same attitude that, in general, you bring to the war, and the Demo congress..

Me? I just like to get some things done that need to be done that I think we could do. NHC, etc., etc.

    Instead you get nothing. Congratulations.

By an astonishing coincidence, that's the exact cud I chew when the girls down at the crick pause during laundry day and they get me started on how I, too, hate the elites.

You don't do your clothes in the creek. You take the water from the creek and carry it up to the kettle, build a fire, throw in some lye soap and boil the clothes, followed by a good scrubbing on the scrub board and a rinsing in some fresh creek water...

And don't forget to get your wash water upstream from where the animals drink, and other things... and your drinking water upstream from the wash water spot..

As for cuds... everybody I know favors Sweet Garrett.

Having considered all the variations, belching up partially digested food and chewing it doesn't strike this Southern boy as particularly appealing.

Perhaps it is a New England thing. All those long winter nights and such.

But I do highly recommend Snuff as a birth control and diet aid....

    I doubt it.

When a cable TV program in Manchester, N.H., included offensive Jewish stereotypes this summer, some in the area weren't surprised when, a few days later, a local synagogue was defaced with anti-Semitic graffiti. Or when, around the same time, extremist groups distributed hate literature in several other New Hampshire communities.

Anecdotal evidence indicates that such incidents are on the rise across the country......

.....The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) estimates that the number of racist skinhead groups in the United States has doubled over the past year, and that the Aryan Nations has 11 new chapters. The SPLC tracked 751 hate-group chapters in 2003, 43 more than the previous year.

More recently, the Anti-Defamation League warned that right-wing militia activists have been recruiting members and mobilizing new groups or cells in at least 30 states as well as on the Internet.

Apples and Tire Irons.  The troops are fighting for democracy. That doesn't include censoring the press.
Iraq war supporters have repeatedly claimed that U.S. troops are harmed when Congress debates alternatives to the Bush administration's failed policies in Iraq. "Think about the message we have sent them," House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) said recently. "We have undermined their efforts, lowered their morale, and clearly sent the wrong message." Vice President Cheney said the war debate was "detrimental to our troops."

Today, however, Army Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute, President Bush's proposed "war czar," disregarded these claims.

LEVIN: Do you believe, General, that the debate that we've had in the Congress on amendments that call for troop reductions starting at a certain point or -- that those debates undermine the troops?

LUTE: Senator, I know of no evidence of that.

I believe the sort of people that are serving in American armed forces today understand the democratic process. And, in fact, that's what we've sworn to protect and defend.

And when they see it play out here in Washington, they understand that. And they're driving on with the mission they were given.

LEVIN: So is it your answer, then, you do not believe that...

LUTE: I don't believe it undercuts their morale.

    LEVIN: Thank you.

He is not alone, Pace, et al, has also said the same.

    From your own link:

When a cable TV program in Manchester, N.H., included offensive Jewish stereotypes this summer, some in the area weren't surprised when, a few days later, a local synagogue was defaced with anti-Semitic graffiti.

    You further made the point:

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) estimates that the number of racist skinhead groups in the United States has doubled over the past year, and that the Aryan Nations has 11 new chapters. The SPLC tracked 751 hate-group chapters in 2003, 43 more than the previous year.

Now I said nothing about people not being able to demonstrate, say the war is lost, etc...

I just noted that you had agreed with me that such actions, according to your own link:

    gives the terrorist a boost.

That of course is based on your own links.

Lute, who you quote, said nothing about terrorists. He was saying that congressional discussions didn't undermine the troops morale.

Do I think he is correct about this totally different subject?

Well, if he was across the desk from me I'd say:

by squeaky on Tue Jun 12, 2007 at 09:35:04 PM EST
Is quite bogus. The white supremacists have an entirely different motivation than the US soldiers do. US soldiers are fighting for US values and democracy. That means a free press. The troops moral is directly affected by the horrible conditions in Iraq and the the obvious lie that we are liberating anyone.

It is clearly 21 century colonialism, nothing less.

The neo nazis do not want a free press, they are the ones who support your view regarding the troops being harmed by any American debate about the war.

Nope, I'm not gonna let you change the subject.

My original comment was about the radical moslem terrorists and how, as your link showed, they are encourged by what anyone can see as signs of dissension over the war in the US.

It had absolutely positively nothing to do with the troops.

I pointed out that Lute's comments about the troops, which you use to try and defend your first statement, is just that. Lute's comments about the troops.

Note the difference. .... Ayran Brotherhood, skinheads, etc. encouraged by TV broadcast.. Further defined by the SPLC. YOUR quote.

My comparsion is that radical Moslem TERRORISTS will also be encourged by dissension in the US.

The terrorist groups are not the same. No one said they were.

What you, through your link and comment proves is that people react positively to information they see as helpful for their cause. The terrorists are people.

Most of us have known that to be true for years. Congrats on catching up.

    2. The issue isn't how many rural folks live outside the south.

    3. The issue is why the Demos can't carry the south.
