Rudy and Robertson Sitting In A Tree

Jon Chait:

Yesterday, Rudy Giuliani traveled to Regent University to kiss the ring of Pat Robertson. For those who don't recall, Robertson is not just a strong social conservative, he's a raving loon. . . . When conservatives are forced to address the subject of Robertson, they usually insist that he's a marginal figure. That's basically what liberals say when forced to discuss the likes of Louis Farrakhan, who is a very close parallel to Robertson. But you don't see Democratic presidential candidates seeking out Farrakhan's warm public embrace. So why isn't the Giuliani-Robertson story getting much national attention?

Since the majority of the country is "religious", this is not seen as such a negative as it is here. In fact, it may be a borderline positive in terms of the general election. Rudy can't win without the winger base, and they won't vote for him without this endorsement. so, publizing this meeting only helps rudy.

Let me say that a little differently. If you are trying to derail Rudy by spreading word of this meeting, you are wrong. The only people that take this as a bad thing are those of us on the Left, and we weren't going to vote for Rudy anyway. Besides, isn't Rudy the best of the wingers (and he's not really a winger) in the first tier?

    And that's being kind.

Did you know Robertson can leg-press a million pounds? (Actually I forget exactly how much but I know it was close to a million.) Yet when I saw him on tv not too long ago when (I think it was) Romney who was there, it looked like he could barely dodder across the stage.

Robertson was in business with Charles Taylor, the disgraced African dictator who is now on trial for war crimes, I believe. Robertson defended him as a "good Christian."

back in the day, when pat was but a young sprout raving loon. i was attending college in fair norfolk, when first i heard tell of him. my initial reaction, upon first seeing/hearing him was: "wow, what drugs is he on, and where can i get some?"

this was before he and his son became multi-millionaires, through the twisted tale/sale of a tax exempt, purportedly charitable organization.

the world hasn't been the same since.

From the linked article, that review of Pat Robertson's book... I knew he was a lunatic, but really didn't quite grasp this particular aspect of his lunacy...wow... Strange days when someone like that is courted by a major candidate for the presidency of the United States and it's all treated in the media as if everything is perfectly normal...
