Romney Wins Iowa Straw Poll

Results:

Mitt Romney 32%
Mike Huckabee 18%
Sam Brownback 15%
Tom Tancredo 14%
Ron Paul 9%
Tommy Thompson 7%
Fred Thompson
Rudy Giuliani
Duncan Hunter
John McCain
Jon Cox

They expected 30,000. 14,000 showed up. The GOP is in trouble in 2008. As for this silly exercise, Romney lost the expectations game so he lost. Huckabee won. Watch for Huckabee talk now.

    AP doesn't bother to edit... (5.00 / 1) (#3)
by Shahryar on Sat Aug 11, 2007 at 09:01:09 PM EST
Ok...Romney got 4,416 votes, 32%, so that 14,000 is right. But AP liked it better when 40,000 were expected so in their current story they "accidentally" left in the 40,000. That's some beautiful stuff. They cleverly and correctly realized that few media outlets that pick up the story from AP are savvy enough to do the math.

    Well done, AP!

Actively ignored at worst. The correction will not be noticed.

It is a pretty insignificant story.

Heck, I probably should not even have blogged it.

The voting machines "malfunctioned". After Romney "joked" (caught on tape) about cheating in the straw poll...

Ok, so I know this thing is meaningless (none / 0) (#1)

Romney wins. That means he was able to bribe more people than any other Repub. Man, that's saying something.

How much did he blow on this?

Has there ever been a slate so small? (none / 0) (#9)

Please correct me if I am mistaken, but I cannot recall an election campaign in which the pickings among one party's candidates are so slim. Dukakis in '88 is the closest I can come. Am I wrong to assume that Romney et al will suffer a similar fate?

How does this compare to 1999 (none / 0) (#11)
by RedHead on Sun Aug 12, 2007 at 12:01:34 PM EST
comparing this to the turnout in 1999 would be useful.

Bush and Forbes, as well as Dole, Buchanan, and Quayle were all out there, throwing around cash and red meat.

Anti-clintonism, "we're not the policeman of the world," and vince foster conspiracy theories were at their height.

we should remember, while bush lost the 2000 election by nearly 600,000 votes, he had an 18 point lead after the GOP convention, in early August 2000.  Yeah, Gore made up 18 points in 3 months.

    Awe 30,000 expected (none / 0) (#12)

and only 14,000 showed.  I'm just crushed.......heartbroken really after what I have personally witnessed the Republican party do to my friends and family.  I know that it is in your nature to keep up with the whole race and I know that the Republicans are going to run a pony.  It is still hard for me to read diaries of this nature.  I usually have dishes, laundry, changing linens, school drop off and pick up, homework.......how much of a percentage of almost nothing can any one of them have ;)?  If it comes down to show me the money........we all know who has the money and we all know which ponies people are consistently betting on.  Hopefully Jesus will get back here in time and they can run him.

    $35.00 a Straw to Vote in Iowa Poll (none / 0) (#13)
by Justina on Sun Aug 12, 2007 at 04:25:02 PM EST
I'm surprised that 14,000 showed up for this non-event as the entry fee was $35.00, pretty pricey for a straw.

Ron Paul was soliciting donations so he could buy his supporters tickets and mentioned that other candidates were paying transportation and hotel costs as well as buying tickets for theirs.

Ah, American democracy in the heartland, where once again the guy with the most money wins.

    -10,000 (none / 0) (#14)
by RedHead on Sun Aug 12, 2007 at 08:24:14 PM EST
according to CBS evening news, yesterday's straw poll was down 10,000 from 1999.  The heady days of blame clintonism.

In 2000, bush got 48% of the vote in Iowa and 48% nationally.  source

using yesterday's turnout as a proxy of general election turnout, the GOP candidate is looking a drop from the 2000 48% mark.

how much of a drop?  2 pts, 8 pts??
