Yearly Kos Day 1.5

Checking in from Yearly Kos in Chicago.

A few notes: The convention center is massive and between a 1/4 and 1/2 mile indoor walk from the hotel. Getting lost is quite easy.

Try to find someplace other than the hotel to eat. Last night Jane and Pach of Firedoglake and I ate dinner at the hotel restaurant. Drink, salad, small fillet and asparagus: $69.00. (a ribeye or strip steak would have been even more.) The food also took almost an hour to arrive.

On the positive side, Yearly Kos registration was smooth last night. We got canvas bags filled with stuff I haven't had time to rummage through yet, and a 70 page magazine consisting of the schedule, speakers and ads. I'd be lost without it, and if you'd like one, you can download it for free at Yearly Kos.

This morning was the round table on live-blogging the Scooter Libby Trial which I moderated, featuring Christy of Firedoglake, Marcy Wheeler of Next Hurrah and Sheldon Snook from the D.C. District Court. There was a really good turnout and they seemed very interested in what we all had to say. Lots of questions at the end and the 90 minutes pretty much flew by. It was great to have Sheldon's perspective on the court's decision to allow bloggers as credentialed media for the trial.

Tomorrow I will be moderating the voting rights panel at 4pm, Ensuring Every Vote Counts. The panelists are Donna Brazile, Spencer Overton, Justin Levitt and Debo Adegbile.

There are a lot of politicians and organizations here. I'd say Yearly Kos is as much about them having access to (and a chance to influence)us as it is about giving bloggers a place to network with each other.

I'm much more interested in hanging out with my favorite bloggers than attending political events and large parties, so my coverage of YKos may be limited. I'll also be blogging about non-Ykos events while I'm here.

If you're at Ykos and happen to read this, I hope you'll chime in in comments.

Try the Tuscany Italian restaraunt. I forget where, but it's in town. Best Italian food I have ever had, only because I was only 13 when I had dinner at Asti's in NYC.

There are thousands of restaurants to try in Chicago, and you chose the one in the hotel?  :)

Go explore a bit - there are plenty of places to go if you are willing to hop on public transportation or take a cab for a couple of miles.

go over to Greektown. There are numerous restaurants where you can get more  excellent food than you can eat and a couple of drinks for half of that.

Eating at a hotel is usually one step above eating at the airport.

I'm not kidding when I say this, but the best pizza in the world is at Gino's East.  It's just off the Magnificent Mile at 162 E Superior.  Get a deep dish pizza and you won't be sorry.

    Here's their menu: http://featuredfoods.com/a-store/gino_p3a.jpg

Your news is welcome Jeralyn.  Does the conference own rights to the session transcript with the famous liveblogger?

How could Kos select a venue so small pre-registration had to close early because it attained capacity?

Are any of you making basement tapes and transcripts of your panel this morning?

Is it true that when mayor Daly vetoed the Chicago living wage law last year, that was the end of the story?

What is the plenary sense of the warmongering statement about Pakistan by Obama?

Has MTW found the lost chocolate fountain of yore?

    on the positive side...

funny, but i just read a post on booman trib expressing much the same sentiment.

one would hope that a meeting of citizen bloggers would be 98% (or at least 75%) positive.

to be honest, among the many reason i chose not to attend this year (aside from the personal, the petty, the pretend, the economic, and the marital [mrs. skippy is expecting me to attend her cousin's wedding in jersey in a couple of weeks and i was hard pressed to justify two cross-country trips in one august]) was the simple fact that i have already spent a week in august at the mccormick convention center.

no place to eat within easy reach, check...miles and miles to get anywhere inside, check...humidity so thick you'd think you were in florida, check...very little night life, check.

still and all, i am quite envious to all those who attended your panel today, jeralyn, since it included christy and marcy and jane, it's like my fav female bloggers all in one room, if i weren't such a gentleman i'd make a wetdream joke!

have fun, and i'm hoping next year y3kos will be (a) somewhere more fun and (b) just be called the "bloggers convention," or at least skippycon 08.

It should be in Denver. Just before the Dem convention. A twofer. We could really kick some tail. Denver might not survive it.
