Huckabee Embraces Orvil Faubus

Robert Stein:

Half a century ago, after the Supreme Court desegregation decision, an Arkansas governor named Orval Faubus stood in the doorway of Central High School in Little Rock with National Guard members to keep African American teenagers out. Now Mike Huckabee is doing a Faubus impersonation in South Carolina.

“You don’t like people from outside the state coming in and telling you what to do with your flag,” the former Arkansas governor told a crowd in Myrtle Beach yesterday. “In fact, if somebody came to Arkansas and told us what to do with our flag, we’d tell them what to do with the pole, that’s what we’d do.”

. . . If Huckabee believes he can win in South Carolina by going back to the past, he should take a look at the later career of Orval Faubus. A decade after the Little Rock standoff, he was managing the Li'l Abner theme park in the "Ozark Mountains, Dogpatch USA."

is the worst of a bad lot.

    NYT article.

And a radio advertisement paid for by an independent group used the flag issue to attack Mr. McCain, of Arizona, and praise Mr. Huckabee. "John McCain assaults our values," it said. "Mike Huckabee understands the value of heritage."

I love seeing the confederate flag emblazoned on trucks and tees and assorted places no one has even thought of yet...I like shortcuts to identity politics!  Yup.  I like knowing who those nitwits are and where they're located.  Saves me a lot of time and energy not having to look them up.

It's sort of an IQ test, ya know?  Like waving a Nazi pennant in Tel Aviv or an American flag in Saigon... hello?

Gotta hand it to Huckabee, though.  It's a funny line and typical of his ability to connect with an easy downhome humor recognized by all sides...wish Hil and Barack were half as humorous as The Preacher.  If he loses the nomination, look for him on some television show...maybe even one of his own!

Of course a later Governor took Dogpatch national, and now we have Daisy Mae threatening to become queen.

For the 1969 season, the manager of Dogpatch hired the former six-term Governor of Arkansas, Orval E. Faubus, as General Manager and President.... He is reported to have claimed that running the park was very similar to running the state.

Provide "Arkansas = backward" joke, here.

One of Charles Mingus' most devastatingly sardonic tunes is "Fables of Faubus"; it has a rolling, rollicking, drunken-sailor feel that viscerally conveys a smugly swaggering authority figure, undercut by the actual lyrics.  Those lyrics were suppressed by Columbia on Mingus' commercially successful 1959 Mingus Ah Um album.  But they are available on some of Mingus' other recordings of the tune:  "Oh, Lord, don't let 'em shoot us!  Oh, Lord, don't let 'em stab us!  Oh, Lord, don't tar and feather us!  Oh, Lord, no more swastikas!....Two-Four-Six-Eight, they brainwash and teach you Hate!"  Mingus was never one to shy from political confrontations, unlike his idol, Duke Ellington, who avoided controversy (while certainly well aware of the issues from his life on the road).

His father was a socialist, who gave Orval the middle name Eugene after one Mr. Debs.  Orval is proof positive the acorn can fall VERY far from the tree.  And that Huckabee doesn't seem to even know where the tree is.
