Abu Ghraib's Lynndie England Gives Interview

Lynndie England, the poster woman for the torture at Abu Ghraib, finished her three year jail sentence a year ago after serving 1 1/2 years. (It wasn't easy time.) She's just given a long interview to the German magazine, Der Stern, which has an English version up.

The headline: Rumsfeld knew.

[England] tells the magazine that when her unit arrived at the prison outside Baghdad in September, the prisoners were already naked, were forced to wear women's underwear, and were being put in stress positions. "The company that we relieved was doing the exact same stuff," she is quoted as saying. "We just took over from them."

I wonder if he also knew non-medical personnel were performing amputations at Abu Ghraib?

    I feel sorry from England. (5.00 / 1) (#1)

Did anyone else actually do time for that mess?

England is this poor, naive young woman who basically was hung out to dry by everyone around her.  She never gave any orders.  She was just some soldier in some pictures.  She thought she was going to do her patriotic duty and serve her country and instead she got screwed by her country.

If I was going to punish Rumsfeld or anyone else, I would have them swap places with England.  Let them live in a trailer.  Let them be afraid to move out on their own.   Let them be afraid that they can't protect their own kid.

Remember Edwards?  That's the America he as talking about.  People not having choices and a society willing to use and discard them for lies.

How tragic.  While Rumsfeld will get his government pensions.  I am disgusted.

up to a point.  Yes, she was one of the fall-guys for a much larger criminal conspiracy.  Yes, I believe she was just following orders.  But personal responsibility has gotta enter into this mess somewhere...at some point we all have to be personally responsible for ourselves and say "I won't be party to this no matter the personal consequences".

Look at all of us, the part of the occupation that isn't being waged on credit is being paid for by us.  I don't see a large scale tax revolt, so we're all guilty too.  Not as guilty as Bush and Rumsfeld and the US Congress who set the wheels in motion of course, but we all have a hand in this.  All of us.

"Just look at this place. There aren't very many jobs to be had outside of the army."

That's not a bug, Lyndie.  That's a feature.  It's meant to put young kids like you in the position where you have to become cannon fodder for Bushco, McBush, and their buddies.  So they can use you worse than Graner ever did.

I'm not surprised she evinces no remorse in the hours of interviews - she was following orders.

    A thousand?  Tens of thousands?

And every last one of them knowing that if they open their mouths to the press, they'll get exactly what she did.

This war has a lot of victims.  We'll probably hear the truth in a decade or two.
