Hillary Clinton on Countdown Tonight

Hillary Clinton is on Countdown with Keith Olbermann tonight. I'll try to live-blog. Hope you'll add in in comments.

Keith does an intro with the MSNBC/McClatchy poll showing Hillary up by 5. He then has a tape of Obama saying he's showed great restraint in attacking Clinton. Then he shows Hillary at a rally saying "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen." He plays the Osama image in her PA ad and a bit more of it.

Here's Hillary in Harrisburg. Is the election going to be decided by the price of the gallon of gas? Can a President do anything about the price of gas?

She answers the economy is going to be a big issue. There are things the President can do. She'd launch an investigation to make sure the prices aren't being manipulated. She'd release some oil from the petroleum reserve. She gives more specifics. (So yes, Keith, there are things the President can do.) She then talks about how the President needs to develop a new energy policy. She links it right to gas. She's sounding very smart and ready. [More...]

Next question about the debate segment on Iran. She says deterrence hasn't been used enough. She repeats that if Iran used nuclear weapons against Israel, they'd be hit with the same.

On her ad and image of Osama bin Laden. Is it a scare tactic? That ad is about leadership and she believes she has it.

The next President will be sworn in during a time of difficult challenges. She wants people to understand what a serious decision it is.

Katrina was also part of the ad. We don't know what the next President would face.

She has a unique set of qualifications that prepares her to be President and Commander of Chief. National security will be a big issue in November. She can better face the Republicans. T

hen asks her about her criticism of Obama's statement that McCain is better than Bush. He asks her if she cheered on

Not at all. McCain has long experience on Armed Services. He has the wrong ideas. He would continue the Bush policy on Iraq. That's the wrong policy. That would be worse than Bush. His economic policies are more of the same Bush failed policies.

You can have a law degree and not be right for certain cases. He's not better than Bush, he's more of the same.

He asks her if all criticism of her campaign is sexist? She gives a very long laugh. She says the historic nature of the race is great -- ultimately, it comes down to who is better qualified.

On the vast right conspiracy and Richard Mellon Scaife's endorsement of her. She laughs again. Why did she meet with him and why didn't she reject his endorsement?

She says she was curious -- she was

She believes in conversions -- even death bed conversions. She was surprised (dumfounded) by the endorsement. It shows she's capable of bringing people together.

It's over. Keith was polite. Hillary laughed a lot. Too much? I thought the first half went better for her.

Why in the world is she going on that show, better yet why in the world is she going on that network. Has she heard or read what that show has said about her, and now she rewards him by appearing on it to boost his ratings because a person like me will now be forced to watch it just to see how she does.

    I once again ask, WHY?

Because the best way to defuse demonisation is to meet it head on. How could KO's viewers still hold on to the cartoon caricature of Hillary that has been purveyed on MSNBC when they see her live and in color. It also shows she has the guts and the good will to meet ALL the people, not just the ones who agree with her. Good on Hillary!

However do you think this going to change anything, my guess is no. He's still going to treat her unfairly, Chris Matthews is going to direct insult at her faster than Ted "whiskey" Kennedy can drown a bottle and the whole bashing is going to continue. Having said this I hope this is a strategic move, i.e. keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

Is he searching for a reason to step back from Obama?  Has he noticed the decrease in his viewership because of Hillary supporters going on self exile from his show?  Oprah has also been silent on politics after a big drop in her ratings by endorsing and campaigning for Obama.  While Ellen deGeneres overtook and surpassed Oprah's ratings and was for Clinton.

Is  KO  getting that nauseating feeling that Hillary might just win in Pennsylvania and beyond?

Immediately after the interview, he went right back to spinning and bashing.  He brought out his main clown, Richard Wolf, who sat bobbing his head while KO asked loaded, rhetorical questions, each designed to put a negative spin on Clinton's responses.  First, he asked if Clinton's criticism of McCain undercuts her own claims to be the most ready, to while Wolf bobbed enthusiastically.  Then, with mock indignation, he asked, "Did I hear her say that she would annihilate Iran?" ( more head-bobbing here )

KO's questions all came from the slanderous rhetoric on KOS.  It was good that Hillary got the chance to answer them, and she did a terrific job.  The faux "analysis" after the interview was insulting and extraneous.  KO is a total hack.

They won't watch her on any other show. Here is one big thing they learned, and cannot play dumb about anymore:  In the debate, when she was talking about a nuclear umbrella in the middle east, she was talking about a formal security arrangement that would foster nuclear deterrence in other countries if Iran goes nuclear.  Since the debate, even though she explained it clearly at the time, people on both Obama's and McCain's sides have been trying to say she meant she was going to go off half-cocked and bomb away over there.  Her spokespeople have done a poor job explaining what she was talking about. Garin especially was horrible yesterday on that point.  So even if that was all she accomplished, I'm glad she went on with KO.

I thought the Scaife answer was also great, but yeah, a tad too much of the laughing.

Democrats are so quick to not want to discuss the fact that presidents can face anything.  Indeed, had we focused more on that in 2000, perhaps it wouldn't have come down to Florida and who people wanted to have a beer with (although I still cannot believe the answer to that question is a shallow, mean frat boy).

If Obama can't defend himself on this issue, then he has no business running for president, IMO.  This is not an issue that will go away in November.

FWIW, I don't think Obama is as strong on this issue as Hillay because he simply doesn't have the experience she does and, IMO, experience matters. But he's still way better than Bush and even McCain because although McCain has experience, he also has absolutely horrible policies that increase the likelihood of all kinds of disasters.

by halstoon on Mon Apr 21, 2008 at 09:06:09 PM EST
what Chambliss did to Cleland? That is what the "bloody shirt" comment was about. In 2004, it was President Clinton who said you should vote for the person who asks you to hope rather than the person who tries to scare you.

I admit she answered it well, and Obama and his team should be embarrassed by how they handled it, but here you skew the issue. No surprise, though.

On the Iranian deterrence question, the issue is that she names Israel specifically but only says "other countries." What does that mean? Does it mean everybody? Would we protect Syria? Lebanon? Jordan? Who would we leave out? That's the part she doesn't answer.

Overall, I was impressed with Sen. Clinton, as always. If it weren't for the fact that I think Obama is better, I'd be happy for her to be the 44th president.

has the best response on Scaife I've seen.  Obama claims he'd sit down with the leaders of North Korea and Iran, but Hillary can't talk to Scaife?

The real problem with Scaife is that it's an example of what Obama claims to be able to do - sit down with people who disagree with him and win them over - that Hillary was actually able to do.  I mean this guy spent millions trying to destroy her and her husband and now he's endorsing her.  And she didn't change any of her positions to get him to do so.  She met with him.  Simply amazing and yet another sign of how bad a president Bush has been.  He has Scaife reassessing the Clintons.

by Iphie on Mon Apr 21, 2008 at 07:43:02 PM EST
Given how often we hear about how divisive she is, I think that Olbermann gave her a tremendous opportunity to prove to people who may not have known about the Scaife/Tribune interview that in fact she is actually a unifying force. That she can convince even the people who spent millions of dollars and years to try to destroy her, to support her. I don't think that's what he meant to do, and I don't think that he registered the irony that she should be appearing on his show as well.

Given the international relations that will need to be repaired by the next president, I think she just gave us another reason why she's better qualified.

Unquote.  I do not make this up.

Also, Obama probably is busy taping the Daily Show just when KO tapes.  And the Daily Show has a much bigger audience.  But it's going to be tough, because Jon Stewart is biased for Clinton.  So say the orangeites.

Keith pitched, Wolffe slung the mud (5.00 / 1) (#149)
by Lora on Mon Apr 21, 2008 at 07:54:23 PM EST
Keith's tone was very cool while interviewing Hillary although his questions were very professional.  No warm fuzzy rapport there, just the answers, ma'am.

His tone changed when he was talking to Wolffe to making fun of/disapproving.  It wasn't overdone, but it was there.

On Iran -- that was dirty.  Keith asked Hillary what she would do in the event of a nuclear attack by Iran on Israel, and she answered.  Then he and Wolffe nailed her for thinking Iran might launch a nuclear attack when Iran has been "going the other way," I believe they said.

Then on McCain: Wolffe was very disparaging about the way she answered -- basically accused her of putting on a big performance to try to cover up her essential hypocrisy.  Charming.

Finally on Richard Mellon Scaife -- sweet Wolffie called it an "unholy alliance."  Just lovely.

Keith set her up, but she was good.  His BS analysis with Wolffe hopefully will be seen as just that.

Keith asked Wolfe why Hillary laughed when he asked about Mellon Scaife?  I think she was
thinking it was pretty funny Keith would ask that question since she came on his show and he has been  a Mellon Scaife himself toward her lately.  I thought her redemption answer was as much to Keith as Mellon Scaife.....truly funny.

I have always greatly admired and respected Hillary, but she was not an automatic. I like Kucinich and John Edwards too. Obama is articulate, intelligent and charismatic, but was an unknown to me. He's still an unknown.

But HRC won me over because she was smart and ready. Because she had the best grasp of the complexity of issues the next president will face. Because she had detailed plans to solve our nation's problems. She blew me away! That's why I support her.

    regarding Carter and Hamas.

I don't mean actual waffles. But that's an interesting issue regarding ex-presidents doing freelance diplomacy.

I also think the nukebrella idea interesting in that it presents the idea of the entire region not being bullied by a nuke-armed Iran. It could be an effective way of isolating Iran from its neighbors, potentially slowing the growth of Iran-supported terrorism and offering some room for further cooperation between countries and organizations that are now enemies.

I also think the potential conditions a H.R. Clinton administration would require for such a nukebrella could yield some positive results. The potential for dealmaking could be tremendous.

For the record, I don't like nukes and I don't like the policies of many of these countries. I don't find many of their leaders particularly heroic. But I am pragmatic about all of this. I'd rather they work together, regardless of what carrots and sticks, if it is the interest of us and the rest of the world.
