Puerto Rico Goes to The Polls . . .

7 hours from now. Starting at 8 am and closing at 3 pm, the people of the Isla del Encanto go to the polls for the Presidential Primary. Clinton is favored. the questions seems to be margin and turnout. Clinton wants big for both.

I'll try and give an early indication of turnout in the morning. My predictions remain the same - Clinton 57-43. Turnout 500,000. Clinton wins the delegate race 31-24.

Any late night predictions for Puerto Rico?

    prediction: 750,000 voters, 15pt spread (5.00 / 2) (#16)
by DandyTIger on Sun Jun 01, 2008 at 12:13:15 AM EST
Just to split the difference between your 500K and earlier hopes of 1M. I call it the Ricky Martin bump.

And with that, the world recognizes Hillary as the popular vote winner and all the SD's come to their senses. I call that my fleeting hope of a Democrat in the white house.

    My prediction (5.00 / 4) (#21)
by TeresaInSnow2 on Sun Jun 01, 2008 at 12:19:23 AM EST
People will say that Puerto Rico doesn't matter, no matter how many people vote.  And Obama will get 4 more delegates than he earned, for the sake of the voters who "would have voted for him if they could."

That space shuttle we saw taking off today was literally delivering a fix to the toilet in the Japanese space station -- how ironic for this day....if only a spaceship could come fix the cesspool that the DNC has become.

    Sorry, I digress.

    I'd guess high turnout... (5.00 / 1) (#29)
by OrangeFur on Sun Jun 01, 2008 at 12:53:49 AM EST
... because everywhere, including Guam, has had high turnout, but for one thing:

Didn't Oregon actually have low turnout? Kentucky was high, but Oregon seemed only so-so. So who knows...

Reading some articles, however, I noticed that Puerto Rico has a high poverty rate--something like 45%, according to the article. The four million residents are US citizens. That so many of them live in poverty feels like it should be a scandal.

It's vote by mail in Oregon.  Since it requires so little effort, I don't think they ever have really high turnout or really low turnout.

and they are turning the state Democrat. What happens in PR today is important for the DNC on many levels, not least because the majority poll for Clinton, and this Latino demographic represents attitudes of the emerging Hispanic majority in our largest states, i.e., FL, NY, CA, etc.

Anyone who underestimates the impact of Ricky Martin's endorsement doesn't know PR.  My FL and NY PR friends are ecstatic over Clinton and refuse to accept the media insisting every few days that Obama has 'won'. They simply say 'No way!'

BTW, anyone who hasn't been to San Juan deserves a visit -- I had one of the best vacations of my life there!

Now I'm going to go make a donation to Clinton -- they need our support to get to Denver . . .

There has been some minor controversy about the reputed language in the song's title and lyrics.[4] The phrase was lyricist Jay Livingston's own variation[5][6][7] on "Che sera sera," a fictional motto which he had seen in the 1954 film The Barefoot Contessa.

by rkcdvd on Sun Jun 01, 2008 at 04:42:26 AM EST
I'm not quite sure how i want to realistically try to analyze the eventual voter participation in PR.  Being Hispanic myself, I wonder how motivated a population of commonwealth-Americans are going to be considering the fact that they will not be allowed to vote in the GE.  From my own experience with my family, I would say that, if anything, the youth will motivate and decide the vote in PR.  Perceptions as to these assumed results will be grossly mis-interpreted and mis-construed. GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF US!

I'm a young Puerto Rican who just came back from voting in Puerto Rico. I'm a Obama supporter and I'm afraid to tell you that from 40 people in the room I was the only one under 50. Hillary is winning big here. Probably by more than 30 percent, I'm afraid. But turnout looked very small for Puerto Rican standards. Puerto Rico won't give her the popular vote argument. Thanks God

    When I voted this morning (none / 0) (#42)
by TomLincoln on Sun Jun 01, 2008 at 09:14:39 PM EST
everyone was above 50 and there was very low turnout, in my opinion. But I spoke to a friend who lives in the Condado area and she said that at two schools she had been to, one where she voted and the other where her husband voted, turnout was good. As I'm writing this, I already know Hillary won 68-32, and that overall turnout was lower than expected.
