Bush to Sign FISA Into Law Today

President Bush will sign the new FISA bill into law today at a ceremony in the Rose Garden.

Just like when I watch the Bachelorette, I'm counting down to his final rose ceremony.

    from FDL and ACLU where they say they are going to challenge it in court immediately. Hopefully the courts will see this bill for what it is.

    Bush got what he wanted.  Eventually, the law will be struck down on constitutional grounds; however I don't hold out a lot of hope that it will happen any time time soon.

    Dear ...

    Thank you for expressing your views on H.R.6304, the FISA Amendments Act of 2008.

    ...

    ...This legislation expires in August, and the Senate is currently considering further revisions to FISA. While H.R.6304 makes some improvements over the previous legislation, it would also grant retroactive immunity from civil liability for those telecommunications companies that participated in the unauthorized wiretapping program.

    While I agree that developments in technology may require some modifications in our intelligence laws, this legislation overreaches and infringes dangerously on the basic rights of American citizens while removing their right to seek legal recourse. The United States must ensure that its citizens are safe and secure, but the Administration has provided little evidence to demonstrate the effectiveness of the surveillance program and the necessity for such an assault on our civil liberties.

    I will continue to support efforts to remove the immunity provision from this legislation, and as this legislation moves forward, I will certainly keep your views in mind.
