    Another state poll shows a huge gender gap... (5.00 / 2) (#3)
by Dawn Davenport on Wed Jul 16, 2008 at 11:23:11 PM EST
...between voters supporting McCain and those supporting Obama.

SurveyUSA's latest poll for NC shows men supporting McCain 58 to 38 percent over Obama, while women go 51 to 44 for Obama, giving McCain a 5-point lead in the state even with women weighted 54 to 46 percent of the voting population.

I'm surprised to have not read more about the male-female split I'm seeing in some of these state polls (since the splits are by much wider margins than in prior presidential elections), and would love some of TalkLeft's armchair polling analysts to provide their take on the topic. It seems to me that Obama really needs a strong turnout among women in November to offset the male skew toward McCain.

    Why are people surprised?
McCain has been trying to talk to black people since March/April.  While I think he's wasting his time, at least he can say he reached out.

As far as the white male vote, I never believed that Obama would beat McCain in this group.  Obama did well with White Male voters in the primaries because they hated Hillary.  It wasn't pro-Obama votes, it was anti-Hillary votes.

Now that Hillary is gone, those men are going back to who they feel comfortable with... McCain.

And why all the shots at Bill, but none at Michelle?  In fact, why any shots at the Clintons at all -- why wasn't this just Obama vs. McCain?  Very odd.  My feeling is that this is just another example of funny people being unwilling to go after Obama like they go after everyone else.  Too bad.
