Maintaining Stamina And Your Diet at the DNC: Open Thread

My first video on my new Flip TV Mino is of Dr. Linda Shapiro of ProActive Health in Denver. Dr. Shapiro is an M.D. and a Ph.D, and an expert in nutrition and fitness.

The topic: How to maintain stamina and your diet while in Denver for the Democratic National Convention.

Note on the audio: My voice came out so much louder than Dr. Shapiro's. I tried to adjust the audio in editing, and was mostly successful except for the last five seconds when it sounds like I'm shouting. Oh well, hopefully I'll improve during the week to come.

This is an open thread.

More fuel for the VP fire. (5.00 / 1) (#5)
by Rhouse on Thu Aug 21, 2008 at 07:06:30 PM EST
From the local ABC station in Philly, a poll in which 46% of the people think Obama will chose Hillary.  I really wonder what's going to happen this Sat. when he announces his choice of the not-Hillary.  And for Jeralyn, Biden comes in a not too distant second.

    I agree (none / 0) (#12)
by DandyTIger on Thu Aug 21, 2008 at 07:22:20 PM EST
and BTD has mention this before as well. I think a not insignificant portion of the 52% of Hillary supporters who say they will support Obama are assuming that Hillary will be the VP. When she's not, there may be a small drop in the polls. But it may be offset by the bounce of the VP pick or at least the bounce of the convention.

I think we won't know the numbers until about a week after the repub convention when they settle down a bit. Then there may be a better assessment of what both VP choices mean.

The school shooting here in Knoxville is so sad. (5.00 / 2) (#6)
by Teresa on Thu Aug 21, 2008 at 07:09:25 PM EST
I just saw the minister from the church where the recent shooting took place on the news. His son goes to school there and he was waiting to drop him off. My step-daughter that lives with me spent all day in lock down (not her school). Two families have been destroyed today. How does a kid just walk into a cafeteria with a gun?

it scared the crap out of me. This kid had had an argument on the school bus with the other boy, so he brought a gun to school (on the bus) and shot him in the cafeteria right in front of the other kids. He died right there.

Can you just imagine if he had started shooting on the bus? He just walked out of the school and the police caught him in about five minutes. They locked down all the high schools. They showed the kids being picked up by their parents and it was just so sad.

the schools had metal detectors, but I guess not. Unreal. He lived in really poor and kind of unsafe area so who knows what kind of problems he had to just lose it like that. I guess he planned it all out though since he brought a gun to school.

(Yes, I've signed up for all those e-mail alerts because Barack isn't getting either my phone number or e-mail address -evil laugh-)

This guessing game is getting old.

I have friends -- Obama supporters -- on AIM and Facebook with their status messages saying the same thing, and they are getting frustrated too.

It better be a really good VP pick, or the sound we'll be hearing after the "New Message" beeps have stopped will be heads exploding from the pent-up anticipation.

And shortly after that, the sound we'll hear is that of the pages of a drapery catalog being flipped ... as John and Cindy McCain select patterns for their eighth home - The White House.

by Anne on Thu Aug 21, 2008 at 08:17:41 PM EST
XM in the car going home tonight, and Rebecca Roberts was talking with - I want to say, Jim Steinhorn? - about the whole VP watch, the management of the news cycles, etc, and he said that he thought Obama had badly mishandled the last couple of weeks.  When asked how he would have advised Obama, he said he would have told him to announce early this week - that way he would have had control of the news cycle going into the convention, with guaranteed control during the convention.

He also said that even though there has been a lot of coverage of Obama, Obama has not really defined himself for the voters, and between the trip to Europe and the Hawaii vacation, he allowed McCain to get the jump on that definition.  Now, it's late in the week, he still has not announced the VP, and with the weekend looming, he's just not playing the media the way he should for maximum effect.

    Everyone sees it...except Obama, apparently.

Maybe for people who are sitting in one place, a small tripod would allow you to keep them on the camera, and then you could step back away from the mic.

I need to remember to stick my tripod in my purse. Hadn't thought of trying to get me in on some of the grandson footage :)

by Jeralyn on Thu Aug 21, 2008 at 07:20:09 PM EST
I do have the tripod and it weighs as little as the   camera so I think I'll bring it along. Or else just remember not to speak into the camera.

I used Windows MovieMaker to do the editing, only because I'm on my laptop and that's what's on it. Usually I use AVS which has dozens of audio and video editing programs -- it's one price for all the programs you want.

I also have some major programs like Sony Vegas but they are too hard to learn. I recommend AVS.

The Flip has an editing program built in but I didn't want to risk ruining the video. I'll check it out next time.

I almost got one about 6 weeks ago because it was available briefly for $134 but I decided to splurge for the Kindle instead (which has 24/7 wireless for free).

But friends asked me yesterday if I'd bought the Flip and I said no and then logged on here to find out you're using one.
I had seen the video by the gal who put her Flip on top of something via that cute little tripod and it filmed her explaining the little Flip to us, and I thought it was very good for such a small, inexpensive item.

Your video quality, though, is even better.  That's amazing.  I guess you'll have to wear a bandana around your mouth LOL!  but others have complained that their own voices were dominant.  So it's time for a super soft-spoken Jeralyn!  The Whisperer!
The video editing did a pretty good job with the balance though!

Will look up AVS.  Thanks.  What a great thing.  I'm going to get one too.  Your interviewee looked very comfortable.
Looking forward to other interviews and video-reports while you're there.

depending on what's more "important" it's a tossup as to whether local or national goes first. I like local coverage for sports, weather and local info and a break from all Obama all the time. Never watch CBS for news for some reason. We do get political coverage each night, but it's limited unless it's really "news" and not just more BS. I think because of the news market I'm in, we don't get much info on church sales  ;)

local TV should go big on national news.  When they do cover it, all they can do is take a canned feed from the network, or worse, send their own generally completely inadequate local reporters out to do the story.  What's the point in either of those two things?

I'd far rather have my local station concentrate on really covering local news-- by which I don't mean crime and features on the newest diet, etc.  Our rather pokey, unglamorous, local family-owned station in Vermont does a pretty good job of just that, happily, which many chain-owned local stations don't.

Hilton thread where BTD accused me of going soft on McCain, let me say, Sen. Obama has yet to go after McCain with anything real. If he wanted to bring up the Keating 5, or other mishaps, mistakes, stupidity, votes and the like of McCain, he is free to do so. I haven't seen any line of attack as yet that makes any sense. People, imo, like success stories, with a little sex added, and action besides. McCain brings that to the table. If this country backed Bill Clinton saying his foibles were a personal matter, so is McCains marriage(s). If McCain doesn't talk about his experience at the Hanoi Hilton now, when? It's his choice. I don't hear Obama ever mentioning his work with the inner city. Why?
