Police Misconduct Leaves Another City in Crisis

Yesterday's city in crisis (as the result of police misconduct) was Indianapolis, where ten officers "have been arrested, jailed or targeted for investigation in the past four months." The crisis is one of confidence in the police department.

Today's city in crisis is the much smaller community of Madison, CT, where a crisis in confidence is compounded by a budgetary crisis.

In just two months, the town has used its entire legal budget investigating misconduct among officers.

Eight Madison police officers have been arrested within the last two years and the police chief has been suspended.

the state has to step in.  How much can it cost to have the state police run an investigation?  Or is it a matter of the city not having this high on their priority list?

if part of the problem is that alot of the police departments have had budgetary cuts(at least here anyways). I know even though our county has grown, thanks to cuts, our sheriff's office will not be able to add deputies. It's sad.

county cops if you'd like...way too many for my taste, and not enough crime so they are just out looking for free American chops to bust.

But, in one way, it might not be. It took the Great Depression to end alcohol Prohibition. As the economy contracts ever further, the strain on law enforcement budgets, usually flush thanks to 'grants' from the Feds to fuel the DrugWar, will become increasingly telling. Which means the DrugWar is eventually doomed to die the 'death of a thousand (budgetary) cuts'. It's either that, or the country goes further more bankrupt than it presently is.

Kinda hard to justify giving bureaucrats, LEOs and Fed agents money to keep your kids 'safe from drugs' (Odd way to do that by killing them, eh?) when you're more concerned about using that money in feeding them...

    Why do I think.... (none / 0) (#7)

the feds and the states prefer bankruptcy.
