Hillary Rolls Out "Hillary Sent Me" Program to Elect Obama and Dems

I was one of a few bloggers and reporters on a Hillary Clinton conference call this afternoon. Also on the call were Ann Lewis and NH Senate candidate Jeanne Shaheen. Listeners included Hillary delegates, supporters and state volunteers, among others.

The purpose of the call: to announce the formation of Hillary's new grass roots action program, Hillary Sent Me. Starting tomorrow, you can read all about it at Hillary's HillPac website.

Hillary was totally excited about this, you could hear it in her voice. It's a program to get out the vote both for Barack Obama and congressional candidates (particularly in the Senate) in the battleground states.

The program kicks off in New Hampshire Sept. 27/28, and Hillary is asking people to travel there to campaign for Obama and Senate candidate Jeanne Shaheen.[More...]

Thanks for everyone who has joined the call. I’m very excited by the program we are rolling out today.

I invite you to take part in something that continues the historic journey you have made with me.

I’ve been traveling for Obama since June. There’s lots of enthusiasm for him. I’m also hearing from those being hurt by failures of the current administration. McCain/Palin offer few solutions, more of the same failed policies of the last 8 years of the Bush Administration.

These last two weeks and the economic situation have made it clear the stakes in this election are the highest ever.

I'm asking you to stand with Hillary, hit the road and spread the word: we must elect Obama and send a filibuster proof majority to Congress.

Hillary Sent Me is a grass-roots efforts through HillPac that will focus on Obama and critical congressional and senate races in the battleground states between now and Election day.

Hillary has been working hard for Obama. Since June, she's been to FL twice, Ohio, NV, NH and NM.

On Sept. 27 she's going to MI. In October, to PA and more.

Jeanne Shaheen says the program is a twofer, you can work in the presidential or senate races.

Ann Lewis came on next and talked about how hard Hillary has been working for Obama. She has raised more than $5 million for him so far.

The main portion of the call was Hillary. She is asking her supporters to help, not just vote for, Obama/Biden and the Dems in November.

(not suprisingly given your negativety lately.) "Hillary Sent Me" sends the message that those of us behind Hillary in the primaries are now firmly behind Obama -- she's not just supporting him herself, but asking her supporters to join her.

We're supporting Obama because we agree with Hillary that Obama/Biden is the best course for the country and it's imperative we defeat McCain/Palin.

Obama is not sending Hillary to do this. It's her program and she's putting the full force of her vast support network behind her efforts.

I really love Hillary doing this.
She has emerged a winner despite the primary loss. Her unequivocal support for Senator Obama has brought her tremendous respect from all of us, including those who did not support in her bid. But she will reap the benefits of her work in the end. There will be so much ahead of her.

the election, but I notice she did wait until his polls started going up to make another grab for the spotlight. This is not to help Obama, but to help her in her next run, to keep her own face and personality before the voters, not just the candidate's. In effect to give them a choice between her and the candidate, within the party, and re-energize those who were until now prepared to vote for him although they had supported her into perhaps again not doing that, in further support of her, and how wrong the party was not to pick her. By trying to show still one more time just how much (adjective of your choice) she is than he is. I have a stopwatch going on how long it will be before the PUMAs show up again.

It's funny. She is morphing a bit into Palin, who is happily trampling the top of her own ticket.

...how totally bizarre Clinton Derangement Syndrome is. It still amazes me to encounter otherwise seemingly intelligent people who, as Hillary-haters, are magically able to divine her deepest, most sinister motives.

I bet that deep down a lot of those people are disappointed that Hillary has proven them so wrong time and time again. She didn't attempt to "steal" the election. She made a gracious speech when she suspended her campaign. She has campaigned on the road for Obama through the summer. And she gave a helluva speech supporting him at the convention. I think this is a way to formalize and organize now disorganized Clinton supporters...Hillary is not running for President, so her supporters have lost the basis of their network. This can sort of open up the conversations that need to be had between Hillary supporters who may or may not be voting for Obama...so that they may vote for Obama.

But it's broader than you state. She is trying to take her base--her power, if you will--and leverage it for good of the party and country. I hope she will use it to push issues also, not just candidates. She is really a brilliant leader.

it's beyond Hillary. This effort by Hillary now isn't just about getting Obama votes either. It's beyond Obama also. Down ticket Dems need help and Hillary's asking her supporters to be there for them. Her supporters are not disorganized at all and many are already working on down ticket Dems. This will help expand it. The Clintons are always there for down ticket Dems. I won't be able to go to other states, but I will be able to help with the NY Dems she asking for support for. "My Dems" are set, so I'll be happy to spend some time where Hillary sends me.

We probably won't know how many Hillary supporters went over to the dark side until exit polls are in. I think any woman who supported Hillary for her policies on women's issues could not in good conscience vote McCain/Palin. They simply won't. In the meantime, I think Hillary is doing her part to get Obama elected and Hillary Sent Me is just another example. To rename it to Obama Sent Me misses the point: 18 million voted for Hillary and it is her name and her influence that is calling out the vote not only for Obama but for others who are running. She is a ntional figure, not just the junior Senator from New York, and she is using that influence wisely. If it benefits her as well who cares? Let's get Obama elected.

and yes, she was so angry.
But every other woman in my world who was a Hillary supporter has come to support Obama. Some more relunctantly than others to be sure. And for some of us, supporting Obama, getting him elected, does NOT erase the resentment and anger about the primaries, the sexism, the right wing narratives used by the left against one of its own. Many of us have pledged that we will support and vote for Obama; as well, we will NOT forget what Dean and the DNC did to the so called backbone of the party. There should be consequences for Dean and friends....
and wanting that is completely another issue.
But some of the more vocal anti Hillary folks want to ignore all she has done for Obama. I am glad Jeralyn is here to remind us and give us more info on what Hillary is doing.

to do with my vote, because it is the opposite of what we're supposed to do in a democracy based on classic libertarian theory. And despite all the evidence to the contrary that we are not capable of measuring up to that ideal, I still hope we achieve it -- and do my part by deciding for myself.

Of course, when I weigh all the arguments for how to vote, I listen to advice from smart people -- like Senator Clinton.

Hello, just joined your site. Was looking to buy a "Hillary sent me button". I'm a 59 yr. old Hillary supporter and this was what I needed to assure me that I could campaign for Obama with heart. There is something powerful about this for me. I was very dissapointed when she was not put on the ticket but the alternative is frightning. And if she can do this, then who am I to complaign?
I just tell people when I'm trying to get them registered to vote and hopefully soon I can wear my button, that if you want not only your sons and daughters coming home in those coffins they don't want you to see, if McCain gets elected, it will be your grandaughters and grandsons.
