Paul Newman, RIP

Shocking and sad news. Paul Newman, one of the finest actors and persons we have ever seen , has passed away.

My favorite Paul Newman scene remains this, from The Verdict:

RIP Paul Newman, a great actor and fine human being.

who was an attorney. What a great film, and pretty realistic for a courtroom drama.

My favorite Paul Newman film is still The Sting. The poker game scene from that movie is an absolute classic.

I put up a poll on your favorite Paul Newman movie at Bleeding Heartland:

Yea, it was an amazing scene and so poignant.

Of course I was in love with Newman and Redford anyway and their portrayals in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting are still two movies that can get me out of any funk.

But this scene, imo, was as much from Newman's heart as from the writer.  And a defining scene.

It's amazing that a person can nearly eclipse their onscreen persona with their off-screen one, in a good way, especially when the onscreen characters are icons of the industry.

    Godspeed Paul. Job well done.

    I think Cool Hand Luke...

"Sorry, Luke. I'm just doing my job. You gotta appreciate that."

"Nah - calling it your job don't make it right, Boss."

One of the best, he will be missed.

with a much appreciated view of the reality of Hollywood and the much more important world beyond that.

Plus he had the best blue eyes ever.

Got some Ginger-Os in the cupboard now.

Good man.  He will be missed.  I hope he was/is an inspiration to many.

He voiced "Doc", the mayor of Radiator Springs in Pixar's Cars.

    He was a wonderful actor an a wondeful (5.00 / 0) (#14)

humanitarian.  I always buy the Newman brand, and while it may cost a little extra it is such a marvelous charity. All of the proceeds, after expenses, go to thousands of different charities.  Newman's loss of his son Scott must have been a heavy price to pay for the young broken family, but Paul certainly made the rest of his years very admirable.

    Talent, sincerity and hard work (5.00 / 0) (#15)

goes a long way in any field.  Newman chose his roles carefully with rarely a misstep and his life and his theatrical legacy are both to be recommended.

Some favorites:  Sometimes a Great Notion, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Hud, Exodus, The Hustler, Sweet Bird of Youth, The Sting, The Long Hot Summer, Butch Cassidy, Absence of Malice, The Verdict...

    A fine choice, BTD...and timely.

of his career.  I loved that movie and that summation is so moving and believable.  (But he shouldn't have slugged that woman in the face.)

What a great actor and real human being.

Guess I have to go see that movie now. . . (none / 0) (#4)

What a huge loss.  He was a tremendous actor and an even finer human being.  I loved so many of his movies, but "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" is my favorite.  He and Redford were fantastic together.

I also loved the great response he gave to an interviewer from "Playboy" when they asked him about his long-time marriage to Joanne Woodward and the temptation to stray in Hollywood:  "I have steak at home.  Why would I go out for hamburger?"

    RIP, Paul.
