Something was lost when he couldn't keep Ava Gardner...

Obama comes for the first time as President to the Bay Area -- a region that so strongly supported him -- but the only folks who get a chance to see him . . . are those who throw big bills on the table? No public events? Shame."

Travel for the POTUS is exceptionally expensive to the tax payers both at the Fed level and local where they have to line the travel routes with police, etc. I am looking forward to the day when he finds himself less comfortable just doing what he personally wants to do rather than understand the consequences of doing what is not in the interests of the country.

The news just showed a clip of Obaman's weekly address this morning. In it, Obama says:

"It's bogus, it's deceptive, and it's all too familiar."  Who knows more about bogus and deceptive?

He was talking about the lobbyists who are currently dominating the DC area, handing out campaign contributions to stop a decent HCR bill from getting through. Begs the question why he didn't get to work ending those lobbyists from the congressional scene before he embarked on this extremely important legislation.

I'll be at the Ohio State/Purdue game. My buddy has 12 awesome tickets and puts together one hell of a tailgate party.

    We're meeting him at 6:30 A.M.

Good times and go Ohio. We'd like another crack at the Gators.

in Yankee Stadium last night.  Fox was strangely silent about that....

It used to be you couldn't even dream of getting those tickets for a playoff game, even if you had the money.  Even a regular season game was tough.  They were chits given out to favored customers or executives by the corporations which are the only ones able to come up with $2000 or $2500 per seat per game (that works out to about a millon dollars a year for season tickets for a box of four seats, BTW).

    Interesting.

I purchased a RT on Delta this week to Los Angeles two days before the trip, and scored a first class upgrade.... Two years ago you could hardly get a coach seat much less an upgrade...

My full size rental car was less than $25.00 a day and my luxury Marriott room was $79 with free breakfast a pass to the club..

Ah yes, it was just so little time ago when you could hardly get a car, full size would be $64/day and the room would have been $220/night....

Now let me see... 2007... Who was Prez back then? And who took over Congress declaring to make things better?

Well that sure worked well, didn't it??

    You lost me (5.00 / 1) (#22)

on what point you are trying to make.

TODAY: You got an exceptionally great deal on all elements of your travel. Dem Pres, Dem congress.

2007: You couldn't get any of this. Repub Pres, Dem House, razor thin Dem major in Senate (both congressional groups just unpacking from their swearing in).

So, you were criticizing ..... ?

I'm not at all happy with the way the democratic administration and congress are managing things, but these great deals you are getting today are on the backs of millions of Americans and not the cream of an abundant crop.  Personally, I think both scenarios you present are the result of rotten leadership.

    People are more concerned (5.00 / 1) (#26)
by Fabian on Sat Oct 17, 2009 at 10:00:08 AM EST
about how much money it takes to put gas in the car, food in the bellies and fuel in the furnace than the price of a plane ticket.  Necessity/Luxury.
    Need/Want.

The reason the prices are down is because demand is low.  The reason demand is low is because people don't have as much money to spend on wants. My brother honeymooned in Mexico in February and he reported thin crowds and people who were almost desperately happy to see them.

NYT reports airfares for the holidays (5.00 / 1) (#27)
by oculus on Sat Oct 17, 2009 at 10:06:21 AM EST
are going up fast as the airlines ground planes to make sure those in the air are full to capacity.

A friend who is building a house in Mexico reports the workers he hires and everyone else he sees has lost a lot of weight.  He thinks of things for the workers to do--maybe not necessary for him--but definitely so for the worders and their families.  He plans to take a dozen frozen turkeys on his next trip there.

I'm absolutely unimpressed with how the dems are handling the economy and unemployment, but when exactly did everything crash and burn so that the dems could win no matter who was on the ticket? Oh, that's right, before the election last year.
