Saturday College Football Open Thread

Another great fight song day. USC ("Fight On!") travels to South Bend to face Notre Dame ("Wake Up The Echoes"), whom the Trojans have beaten 7 in a row. Make it 8. I like USC (-10).

The Red River Shootout at the Texas State Fair does not have the luster of past meetings, but remains a big and intriguing game. Texas ("Texas Fight") has not been impressive but they have won them all. Oklahoma ("Boomer Sooner") has suffered devastating injuries and 2 close losses. The line is Texas (-3). I'm not sure about this one. In a non-selection pick, I think the Horns hook 'em somehow. More on the flip.

Iowa ("Fight for Iowa!") travels to Madison to face the Badgers ("On Wisconsin"). Wisconsin is a 2.5 point favorite in the game. They actually outplayed Ohio State from the line of scrimmage last week but killed themselves with turnovers. But I think the Hawkeyes (+2.5) find a way.

The Crimson Tide ("Yea Alabama") host the Gamecocks of South Carolina ("Step To The Rear"). I think the Old Ball Coach brings em to play. I like S. Ca. (+18) to keep it close.

Nebraska ("Hail Varsity"), fast becoming the flavor of the month in college football, host Texas Tech ("Fight Raiders Fight"). I am a contrarian, and Texas Tech has scored a ton of points on Nebraska since Leach became the coach. I think they score a ton today. I like the Red Raiders (+10.5).

Virginia Tech ("Pride of VPI") travels to Atlanta to face the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets ("Rambling Wreck"). I like the Yellow Jackets (+4).

In other games, I like Houston (-17), Georgia (-7.5), the Chippewas of Central Michigan (-7), UCLA (+3.5), Arkansas (+24.5) and Colorado St (+22.5).

Go Gators! Go Yankees!

Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, I spoke to in Greece, including a group of 12 special ed. teachers I chatted with on a cruise to Greek islands, and in Egypt, absolutely LOVES Obama.  LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!  Surreal.

    I should point out that (5.00 / 2) (#9)

Ran into an American in Egypt who was taking a sabbatical from Accenture for a 4 month trip around the world, all continents.  He was on his way to Petra the next day.  I actually thought of you, or at least your username.
    Thanks for asking.  Excellent trip.

    is complete.

Who knew?  I though Michelle Obama would be the next Princess Di, but instead it appears to be Barack?

Does he really get that much credit for not being George W. Bush?   Or is it the David Hasselhoff phenomena where someone of modest talents becomes wildly popular?

Michigan State (-14) hosts Northwestern, Michigan (-39.5) hosts Delaware State (!).  I'm hoping for two blowouts, because I'm fairly certain there will be at least one.

In other news, I just realized there's a scenario where Pedro Martinez starts against the Yankees in the World Series.  Now there's a game I'd pay to see!  Who's your daddy?

    Andrew Sullivan explains Obama's temperment... (none / 0) (#2)
by Addison on Sat Oct 17, 2009 at 09:30:55 AM EST
...the only way he knows how:

Another instance of Sully-style racism here. I think he thinks he's being complementary. Money quote:

I'm sure the genetics of this can be hotly disputed. But leaving the science behind...

    Indeed.

You see, as a black man he couldn't possibly be prudent with money or bring "balance" back to government, apparently. That's not genetically feasible. So what's the explanation? Oh, yes, of course: Obama is a White-Angle Saxon Protestant "trapped" in the skin of a black man. That explains why -- against all visible evidence -- he's "prudent" and "balanced" instead of a risk-taking, impulsive, sort; he's secretly white! Leaving the science behind, he's like one of those vanilla and chocolate sandwich cookies, whatever they're called...

Why can't Sullivan let Obama be a prudent black guy in a black guy's body? Or better yet, just a prudent guy? Andrew Sullivan, what on Earth are you ever thinking and why do you never learn?

    Anyway, perhaps I've overreacting.

In spirit of the thread, I went to a 1-AA school, so I guess it's "Roll Tide!" for me.

...a double goad with the "Roll Tide!" But I did live a year in Alabama, so it's not just to mess with you. When they (as expected) lost to Utah I was in a sports bar in Montgomery. That was a crushed and very "sad drunk" room.

They are bound for Charleston as soon as he is finished with A-school.  Not a bad place to make a new start, but she is far from convinced to go that route.  She seems back at going back to school.  I would love for her to choose that for herself.  I would sit the girls hummming a tune.

She says that she must have the baby before she has any idea about what she singularly feels about any guy outside of spouse.  Which I know to be true.  I discovered myself pregnant with her and had broke up with her father when that happened.  I had a guy who wanted to date me and I was very interested in him as well.  I told him that I was pregnant though, he said he was fine with it.  I broke off our dating though six months into it.  My hormones weren't going to belong to anyone but me and the baby at that time and he could not understand that.
