Tancredo Implodes, Equates La Raza With KKK

Tom Tancredo has officially lost his marbles. (Video here.)Today, in discussing the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court, he said:

TANCREDO: If you belong to an organization called La Raza, in this case, which is, from my point of view anyway, nothing more than a Latino — it’s a counterpart — a Latino KKK without the hoods or the nooses. If you belong to something like that in a way that’s going to convince me and a lot of other people that it’s got nothing to do with race. Even though the logo of La Raza is “All for the race. Nothing for the rest.” What does that tell you?

SANCHEZ: Alright. We’re not talking about — we’re not talking about La Raza –

TANCREDO: She’s a member! She’s a member of La Raza!

La Raza is a civil rights organization. As TPM says:

For those who aren’t familiar with it, La Raza is basically a Latino equivalent of B’nai Brith or the NAACP. Garden variety and uncontroversial unless you thinks it’s a public safety issue if more than a handful of Mexicans or Puerto Ricans get together in one place at the same time.

La Raza responds to Tancredo's remarks. Among its comments:

“If you look at Mr. Tancredos’ record, he’s often spoken about things he doesn’t know anything about.”

Last week, Tancredo called President Obama "a cult leader."

He is — you have to admit — he is a cult leader. And the cult will go with him wherever he wants to go. You just don't know about the size of the cult; how big it is — if it's shrinking or growing.

And if you think Republicans will embrace him, think again. He also called for the legalization of drugs last week.

to dusty ole buzzards guarding the halls of LAW AND ORDER in her last year of law school.....I'm thinking she isn't exactly thunderstruck :) She's probably made of sterner stuff than we imagine. She's a woman and she isn't even white and she's a mature woman. She was around during the birth of feminism and the backlash and she's Latino. She's tougher than I am in the face of reality.

Teh Tank has only one purpose--to sow the seeds of hate, distrust and fear. He's so darn good at it too. Just look at how much air-time he gets. It is a wonder that Fox hasn't hired him yet.

Colorado's 6th Congressional District is a wingnut's paradise. Tancredo was (and is) very representative of the voters there.

However, having lived in CD6 myself once upon a time and working day-in and day-out with plenty dead-enders who still do, the over-all point stands. It may be getting better (i.e., Coffman is a little better than Tank), but there's still a long ways to go.

Lisa Navarrete told The Colorado Independent, "We've been urging the Republican Party to try to outreach to the Latino community, and they did a good job of it until they let people like Tom Tancredo take over the debate on immigration."

That's very unfortunate. Tanc is unfortunate too, but it's a shame that an organization like La Raza would encourage any relationship between the GOP and the oppressed minority they are trying to help.

Tancredo echoed a popular right-wing myth, claiming the group's slogan is "All for the race, nothing for the rest." When ThinkProgress asked a La Raza spokeswoman, she replied, "No. That's very much incorrect." In fact, the true slogan is "Strengthening America by promoting the advancement of Latino families." A far cry from Tancredo's egregiously false, race-based characterization.

And I think we talked mostly about non-political things like riding motorcycles and our kids. He had been having some health issues and had just sold his.
I have no soft spot for these comments. And, I see today, he's digging himself in deeper.

tell how angry he was? Maybe because I know the studio and the kind of chair, it seemed to me at one point he put his hands on the arms of the chair as if he was about to get out of it. He was really angry he kept getting interrupted. I'm sure the cameraman, who is a very nice guy, got an earful when the segment was over (as if it was his fault.) And, I'd bet the control room staff at MSNBC were laughing and yelling in the cameraman's headset. He'll probably need a stiff drink after this segment.

I was confused also. I was flipping around because the Yanks are on RD.
I missed some of what he was saying because it's really hard to wrap my head around this type of rant on TV! I thought Molinari (sp?) held up pretty well and managed to keep focused on the proper message. Oy. I hope his blood pressure is ok.
KO is going to highlight Liddy's lovely words as he does his worse thing. . . .
It really needs to stop raining in Cleveland so I can get my game!!! :)
