Lanny Davis has a form WSJ/NY Post column he pulls out to punch the hippies for any occasion. Here's his Blame The Left (the literal title of his Wall Street Journal op-ed) piece explaining Massachusetts:

We Democrats had to explain to Massachusetts voters and other Americans why non-Nebraskans and nonunion members have to pay more taxes, while Nebraskans and union members get to pay less. Those two deals seem to have alienated most people across the political spectrum. That's not easy.

Somehow, in the last 12 months, we allowed the party of Bill Clinton and Barack Obama to morph into the party of George McGovern (or more accurately, his most ardent supporters) and Howard Dean, who called for the defeat of the Democratic health-care bill if it had neither a public option or Medicare buy-in.

Heh. Now the "hippies" are responsible for Ben Nelson's sweet heart deal and for the unions taking care of themselves regarding the excise tax. Lanny Davis is one strange dude. But what is funny is this is exactly what you are hearing from some blogs.

    And in one of the dumbest and most dishonest Op-Eds ever written, Lanny Davis echoes that claim in The Wall St. Journal:  "Blame the Left for Massachusetts" (Davis attributes the unpopularity of health care reform to the "liberal" public option and mandate; he apparently doesn't know that the health care bill has no public option [someone should tell him], that the public option was one of the most popular provisions in the various proposals, and the "mandate" is there to please the insurance industry, not "the Left," which, in the absence of a public option, hates the mandate; Davis' claim that "candidate Obama's health-care proposal did not include a public option" is nothing short of an outright lie).

    Davis is right in that first paragraph. It really ticked people off that everybody was going to ahve to pay that excise tax but unions and it even managed to tick the unions off too. And did anybody outside of Nelson like the deal NE got?

    McGovern-like. This is a big problem, as I see it, across the board. Republicans label everything Dems do as socialist, and it sticks. Then even a small move to the left bacome socialism.

    he is all but claiming he wanted to screw Nebraska like everybody else but the party wouldn't let him.

    Seriously, can someone please tell me where this party of George McGovern is, because I seem to have missed that train, and am stuck with a bunch of New Democrats who couldn't find their a$$es with both hands.

    I hate to invoke one of your faves, BTD, but even Andrew Sullivan knows Davis is full of you-know-what.  Responding to this statement from Stephen Bainbridge:

    "Obama and the Congressional Democrats (especially in the House) governed for the last year as though the median voter is a Daily Kos fan,"

    Sullivan says:

    This must come as some surprise to most Daily Kos fans.  But if one had traveled to Mars and back this past year and read this statement, what would you assume had happened? I would assume that the banks had been nationalized, the stimulus was twice as large, that single-payer healthcare had been pushed through on narrow majority votes, that card-check had passed, that an immigration amnesty had been legislated, that prosecutions of Bush and Cheney for war crimes would be underway, that withdrawal from Afghanistan would be commencing, that no troops would be left in Iraq, that Larry Tribe was on the Supreme Court, that DADT and DOMA would be repealed, and so on.

    Yeah, us liberals have gotten so much that we're now getting greedy, right?

    the meme of the Villagers.  Obama and the Dems have been way too leftist, and so Scottie With a Truck won.  The calls for Obama to be more "centrist" (i.e., more "rightwing") have already started.  I would have been ecstatic if even half of Sullivan's musings had come to pass.  But, then, I'm an aging hippie, former McGovern (and Gene McCarthy) supporter, and I'm too busy right now ducking all the punches.

    Wasn't it the "middle of the road" voters who stayed home yesterday or who voted for Brown?  (Answer: yes).  And it was definitely "the middle" that gave Obama victory last year, so what's a politician to do?
