Tuesday Afternoon Open Thread

I was in Missouri this weekend. Saw a few political ads - not impressed with the work and found that the folks in the heartland are not really tuned in to politics, but to the degree they were, they sure don't like Obama and the Dems. Judging by what I heard, I smell a 1994-style rout.

The good news? College football is just around the corner. Go Gators!

"I feel bad sometimes," says Grayson, talking to a small group of supporters, "because I feel like Democrats should have delivered more for the people who supported us. In 2008, 75 percent of the people who voted for me were Democrats. Only 23 percent of Republicans voted for me. What does that tell me? I should be doing the most for the people who voted for me, not the people who voted the other way."

Black Water Dog has a brand new article up that talks about how even Joe Klein is defending the President.  I was going to point out that using Joke Line to defend your position is at best unfortunate, at worst completely bat-guano insane.  But I've already lost my uprating ability, so that chunk of reality was best kept to myself.  Reality is not very popular these days.

If Joke Line told me the sky was blue, I'd still double check it.  Next to Tim Russerts' garbage pail kid, he is the worst POS reporter in Washington D.C.  The man is a hack with a capital 'H' and a capital 'ACK'.

To quote every Star Wars film "I have a bad feeling about this" when it comes to the Fall.  Luckily the Repubs are flat insane, it's our only hope.

It's the whole "You're a racist" crap that is all the rage down there at this point that has me stewing.  That is a really sick charge to make at a Liberal as we try to be sensitive towards the whole racism issue.  It's bringing back all of the warm fuzzies from the Primary.  LOL

Seriously, watching a BWD thread unfold is like watching a car accident in slow motion.  You know what's going to happen.  I think within 20 comments today the whole "Liberals are racist" meme came out.

Awww, screw 'em, let the babies have their bottles, but DK will die under these conditions because if the Admins only take one side then there is no chance for a reasonable debate.  I'll take solace in that the Left has been right far more than the centrists or Republicans.  Only obtaining moral victories seems to be our lot in life.  It's really going to suck to see the really bad guys take control again, but it won't be my fault, I voted for the Democrat like I should, only to be called the same names from them that Shrub called us.  Woo-hoo, PROGRESS!!  LOL

Bless you as well MT, you're good people.

I don't keep track of what is going on over there as things evolve.  I certainly like commenting here much much better, people usually discuss a lot more here.  Different aspects of certain problems are usually revealed and more facets of what really lies at the bottom of a lot of our greater challenges.  When certain writers began needing to leave there because they wrote about things that upset people I knew that it had lost something vital.  The Don't Worry Be Happy crowd sure got ticked off when the site was labeled by Time Magazine as one of the most overrated blogs.

    Tea Party fraud? (none / 0) (#4)
by jbindc on Tue Aug 24, 2010 at 02:53:00 PM EST
No, not what you're thinking.  Apparently some Michigan Democrats are accused of fraud and deception in the latest primary elections, by backing (and running as) fake Tea Party candidates in local races.  One Democratic official has already resigned in the case.

The left-leaning Detroit Free Press editorial board wrote this today:

There are campaign dirty tricks, and then there are perversions of the electoral process that cry out for some authoritative response and criminal consequences.

The flap over an allegedly fake slate of Tea Party candidates, intended to siphon votes from Republicans this fall, is looking more and more like the latter. It's time for the Oakland County prosecutor and the state attorney general to get involved, and get to the bottom of this affair.

What we know so far casts real doubt on the sincerity of this Tea Party exercise. The principals behind it have been exposed as Democrats with union ties. They were all put on the ballot in very competitive districts where votes for them would hurt Republican hopefuls. And last week, a Democratic operative in Oakland County was accused of fraudulently notarizing affidavits for a dozen of the candidates on the ballot. That in itself is a crime worth prosecuting.

But it's also worth finding out how deep and wide this planned diversion goes. Who bankrolled it? Did state party higher-ups know about it, encourage it or aid in the high jinks?

If Jason Bauer, the Democratic official accused of falsely notarizing Tea Party candidate affidavits, conceived, financed and executed the ruse alone, so be it. But if he had help, those responsible should be called to account, too.

Beyond the potential criminal implications, this couldn't come at a worse time for the political process. Voters face serious, difficult choices throughout Michigan this fall, in races that will have critical influence over the state's direction.

If voters' faith has already been shaken by the corruption we've seen in southeast Michigan and the inability of public officials around the state to work together to solve our problems, this Tea Party nonsense rattles it further.

And how desperate do Michigan Democrats look by trying to pull this off? It's almost an admission that the party's candidates need something other than merit to win this fall.

Monday, the state Board of Canvassers denied all the Tea Party candidates places on the ballot, thanks to Republican members of the body who voted not to certify the party. Democrats on the board voted to put the Tea Party on the ballot -- yet another sign this is all a sham.

If that's all it is, the ballot decision will be sufficient. But prosecutors need to be sure any criminal behavior here is addressed.

Mark Twain on temperance.  The mind reels.:-)

But on women's rights, not a man ahead of his time.  So he did come around in the 20th century . . . but millions of women had won the vote, at least in the West, by the time he said this in 1901:

I know that since the women started out on their crusade they have scored in every project they undertook against unjust laws. I would like to see them help make the laws and those who are to enforce them. I would like to see the whiplash in women's hands.

I will have to see just when he wed the suffragist, as perhaps that was her influence -- as well as his ever-brilliant way of reflecting his times, reaping popularity by not being ahead of his public.

wrote a book called 'John Barleycorn' (a euphemism for alcohol, I know I had to look it up) where in the beginning he talks about how he is about to go vote for the right of women to vote because it would bring on Prohibition, which due to his own struggles with alcohol he nominally supported.  As much as alcohol is a problem today, it was ten times worse back then (1913).  We now know that Prohibition didn't work (are you listening politicians and the DEA!) but at the time it seemed necessary.

I really like his work, but he was no ally to women or especially minorities (he was even racist for his time, which is really saying something) but he had many great works and ideas.  The Jackson in my name is for him, and the Hunter is for Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, another hero of mine.  I like my stuff fiery I guess.  :)

The republican races are the most interesting, though a little lackluster without the Rubio-Crist showdown. I'l be watching the McCollum gubernatorial primary race against the self-financed millionaire.

Dem. Kendrick Meek pulled ahead of his primary challenger in the polls (for the Senate seat) with help from visits from the Big Dog WJC and Obama. Both he and McCollum ran the 'me, the public servant, vs this rich outsider' race. I think they will both probably win.

The big winner might be Alex Sink, the Dem gubernatorial candidate. McCollum might win his primary, but he sure did not come across as very attractive doing it. Sink had a good ad this weekend along the lines of 'while these two idiots are arguing, I'm getting ready to run the state'. It was humorous and effective, I thought.

about the Tea Partiers coming in for the Glenn Beck apolitical "Restoring Honor" flustercuck.  How is a five star charity under a chariter granted by the Secretary of Defense involved in this?

It is turning out exactly how I figured it would, but how can I have been the only one truly aware of the only place any of this could possibly go?  It just isn't possible unless you are a total fecking incompetent umpire of social issues.  This is going to end up being such a raging black eye for the "apolitical" military, they are going to feel like they got HAMP'd all night long.

But Can't  stand Obama, don't like Dems pretty much describes life here in Mo.  State is full of whackos.

I live in the bluest part of the state, St. Louis City, but I work in St. Louis County which is purple.  At best people seem indifferent about the fall election.  At best.

The DNC was here last week for meetings.  Of intent they didn't mention Carnahan and she stayed away from them.

And to think that at one time people thought she'd blow Blunt away.

Senate candidates are pushing many of the same Republican agenda items. One sweet Claire is enough for any state. Shame Robin decided to mirror her positions.

I've always said I'd take Robin in a heartbeat over Claire.  But I'm having a hard time remembering why these days.

I love it Z...Barry Cooper is the man, I remember reading about him in Rolling Stone and being really impressed with his epiphany, turning from the dark side to join the force...you sure don't see that everyday.  His DVDs and his work are truly a public service.

    Keep it up Coop!

Who wants to live in Missouri?

    Anyone? ....

Everyone in Missouri is on their way somewhere else. No one there's going to have a good word to say about Democrats.

I blame Obama. Like it or not, I voted for him, you ended up voting for him, and he's no good.

Why do 8 out of 10 of our elected leaders suck? I've got Jim Sensenbrenner to atone for. And, I suppose a lot of you would say Feingold, too. Not to mention Herb Kohl.  They all suck. I mean they all suck hugely. And, apologies to everyone, they seem to be the best I can do.

    Kohl. Feingold. Sensenbrenner.

That's why the only solution that makes sense any more is an unabashed class war where we bury the rich. I mean, just bury them all.

If I had a million dollar, I wouldn't have a million dollars because I would have given $900 thousand of it away to others that needed it more than me.

    So would you.

So why aren't we working together to destroy the bastards that steal the wealth we've created rather than share it, as we would, with a shared sense of satisfaction?

The distinctions need to be drawn more clearly; more colorfully. So many smart voices here that speak so much in shades of gray.

Blue Dog Democrat Allen Boyd barely beat Al Lawson in FL-2 primary - 51% to 49%  I was amazed that this race was this close. Boyd had tons of money.  There wasn't a day that you didn't see a Boyd ad attacking Lawson.  It was close because Democratic stronghold Leon County/Tallahassee went overwhelmingly for Lawson.

restaurant grand opening yesterday.  Man I hope they make it, that's a tough business. Carribean food and wow can they cook.  One of the guys who showed up went through flight school with my husband about seventeen years ago, and a lot of other Latino pilots showed up for the occassion.  Most of them have been recruited into slots to train Latin American pilots.  A lot of them Colombian from what they were talking about yesterday, and kdogs comment causes me to reflect some on that.

But the stories yesterday were really entertaining.  Lots of stories about teachers spending hours and hours trying to figure out Spanish equivalents for helicopter systems that right now only have English labels.  It turns out that when someone is learning something new they can also learn the English word for it just as easily.  My husband's friend said when he first started he was laying awake one night trying to figure out how to describe something and he got it wittled down to about ten words.  The next day he was trying it out on his student and his student had to stop him and asked him if he was trying to say THE BACKUP?  Pretty funny stories.
