The thing about the green and yellow lines is that a huge fight broke out amongst teenagers a couple of weeks ago that involved about 50 people and started in one station and continued on the train and spilled out in another station.  Since then, on the weekends, they've upped a police presence and the Guardian Angels have been on patrol.  That being said, I take the yellow line to and from work everyday and the worst thing I encounter is people
who listen to music too loudly with their headphones or the guy last night who constantly cracked his gum.

Psst - I've also got a little secret for the Tea Partiers - NoVa also has a pretty diverse population.

    Alan Simpson's jaw-dropping letter: (5.00 / 1) (#13)
by Anne on Wed Aug 25, 2010 at 10:24:46 AM EST
To Ashley Carson of the Older Women's League, in response to her HuffPo piece from April:

    From: Alan K. Simpson
    Sent: Monday, August 23, 2010 6:52 PM
    To: Owl
Subject: To Ashley Carson re 4/27/10 article

Ashley B. Carson Executive Director, OWL

    Dear Ms. Carson,

Someone was good enough to forward me your column of "Enough with the Pink Panthers Bit" of April 27, 2010.

Some of what you say is true. Much is not - but that's nothing new about public life for me! I have news for you too, my friend. There may be no group called the Pink Panthers working to protect Social Security but I sure as hell am! I've spent many years in public life trying to stabilize that system while people like you babble into the vapors about "disgusting attempts at ageism and sexism" and all the rest of that crap.

Now hold on tight, because you won't like what I'm sending you. You may obviously be aware that the Social Security system is "in trouble." If you don't agree with that, then there is no need to read any further. But I wish to share with you the presentation by Stephen C. Goss, Chief Actuary of the Social Security Administration on May 12, 2010 to the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform. If you think the statistics on poverty for seniors are alarming - then you need to read this little pamphlet to know what is really alarming.

If we can't get a handle on this system and make it sustainable and assure long term solvency, and make some changes that are "minor" at the present time and will become "major" as each year passes, then take a look at the chart on Page 6 which I hope you are able to discern if you are any good at reading graphs - or anything that might challenge your biases and prejudices.

Anyway, have a look at it and if you should choose, you might communicate with me. If you have some better suggestions about how to stabilize Social Security instead of just babbling into the vapors, let me know. And yes, I've made some plenty smart cracks about people on Social Security who milk it to the last degree. You know `em too. It's the same with any system in America. We've reached a point now where it's like a milk cow with 310 million tits! Call when you get honest work!

    Al

OWL has started a petition drive calling for Simpson's resignation; seems an appropriate response to someone whose disdain and disrespect is - beside being offensive and revealing of Simpson's mindset and character - wholly unnecessary.

He's never been anything other than arrogant though his whole life.  He'll deny that there is any "emergency" TODAY called global warming though and he seemingly can't read any of those graphs.  Based on todays economy though (and that always changes....particularly when you begin to represent the people and not the millionaires, and then everything gets very stable and prosperous) Social Security will be in trouble around the time that I will be getting close to death.  After that it will only be 70% solvent :)  But the economy improves, then Soc Security contributions will also improve and who knows when it will ever be insolvent.  All of Al's banker friends though are insolvent now sucking on my tits and they are free to live and die completely insolvent :)  He has always been such a heinous man though.

smart cat that Twain...makes you wonder who, in fact, lives in darkness.

    Liked this bit....

There must be two Americas: one that sets the captive free, and one that takes a once-captive's new freedom away from him, and picks a quarrel with him with nothing to found it on; then kills him to get his land.

Describing the military industrial complex before it existed in America...very smart cat that Twain, very perceptive.

    Daddy Warbucks' bio:

He was born about 1894, near the small town of Supine. (In the movie musical, he says he was born in Liverpool.) His father, a section boss on the railroad, was killed when he was a month old. His mother was left with only "gumption" and a house in which she was able to keep boarders. His early youth in Supine involved cornering all the marbles in town at age nine, serving as a messenger for the telegraph company, having a girlfriend named Millie, fishing, swimming and raiding melon patches with Spike Spangle and beating up the son of the banker who planned to foreclose on his mother's house. Then on June 7, 1905 when he was 11 years old, his mother died at age 30, of typhoid. On the night of the funeral he was put on the outbound Limited. Presumably he later spent some time in the city for he and Paddy Cairns were companions together in the old 8th Ward.

For a few semesters he attended college studying engineering but found no time for football or girls because he had to work seven nights a week and Sundays in the local steel mill to pay a debt. His family background and lack of prep school education kept him from entering a fraternity.

    Career, family, and pursuits

He eventually became foreman in the rolling mill, married Mrs. Warbucks, worked and planned for a family and house of their own. When "Daddy" began to make big money during World War I, the marital happiness was lost, but he retained his identity with the common people.

After the war, Warbucks continued as an industrialist, but became a philanthropist as well--his fortune had built to "ten zillion dollars." His wife instigated the taking in (no adoption ever took place) of Annie while Warbucks was away on a business trip. On his return, he was smitten with Annie and, as her father-figure, offered the girl support as needed. He often intervened in Annie's life during crisis, always returning in time to save the day.

During World War II, Warbucks, along with his bodyguards Punjab and Asp, joined Allied forces. Warbucks became a three-star general.

Despite his immense wealth, Warbucks is, occasionally, reduced to such poverty as to be forced to raid Annie's piggy bank. He always leaves an I.O.U., and he is always restored to his wealth and repays Annie.

He was knighted by the Queen of England later in life.

I haven't heard much about any moves the Obama Admin wants to make to fix the economy so I read about his stump speech this morning:

He recently said, "We're slipping and sliding and sweating, and the other side, the Republicans, they're standing with their Slurpees watching us."

He added, "Finally, we get this car to level ground ... and what happens? [Republicans] want the keys back. Well, you can't have the keys back ... You got us in the ditch."

With the nation's unemployment rate at 9.5 percent and jobless claims at their highest level in nine months, Milhizer said, "Many people would say we're in the ditch now."

    and

During his speech in Seattle, Obama said, "The truth is it's going to take a few years to fully dig ourselves out of this recession. It's going to take time to bring back 8 million jobs. Anybody who tells you otherwise is just looking for your vote. But here's what I can tell you: After 18 months, I have never been more confident that our nation is headed in the right direction."

Is there a plan?  Is it just going to happen?

by sarcastic unnamed one on Wed Aug 25, 2010 at 11:45:09 AM EST
on the way to work this AM.

I stopped at a local OSH (Orchard Supply Hardware, a local hardware chain) and on the way out I witnessed an employee having a bit of a confrontation with a guy in a pickup truck who had a bag full of squashes he was picking from a vine that was planted near the store's entrance.

At first I thought it odd that a squash vine would be part of a chain-store's landscaping but it quickly became clear that the vine was planted by that employee. and I assume she had watered and tended to it all summer.

Anyway, she said to the guy, referring to the squashes he was taking and not showing any signs of giving up, "But they're not yours!"

And I thought to myself, she's absolutely right. This guy was at least 35 y/o and he was stealing. It's something I have to tell my kids no occasion(11 & 8) - "It's not yours." But a 35 y/o guy?

I wonder, if because it was on the store's property, it could be legally defined as stealing or destruction of private property.  I would have tried to take his license plate or other info and checked it out.  If only because the threat of litigation might make him return the squash.  It's not something I would try to send him to jail over, but a fine for destruction of property or something might teach him a lesson, and compensate the employee.

Had to run out of the house w/o breakfast this AM so I could have time to go to OSH before work. My stomach is growling.

But I know what you mean, this guy had a reasonably decent vehicle and from his dress clearly worked in a construction trade. Probably was at OSH to buy something for a job he was doing. Not a skinny guy by any stretch, if that matters.

And these weren't cucumbers, you have to cut these things up and cook them to eat them and the guy must have stuff for doing that.

Even if was literally w/o food nor any prospects of getting any any time soon, how hard is it to ask someone in the store if it would be Ok to grab a squash or two? You know, because it doesn't belong to you.

This was next to the store entrance among all the neatly manicured hedges and brightly colored flowers all planted in rows and stuff. And the vine is big, it's definitely not something the store's maintenance staff just happened to overlook for the past 3 months or whatever. Clearly it was there because the store wanted it there.

Kinda surprised the guy didn't take out a trowel and dig up some of the violets so he could plant them by his own front door...

I comfort myself by trying to remind myself that people do a tremendous amount of good deeds that all-too-often go under the radar every day..

And the squeaky wheel continues to get the grease.

    So it goes.

    illustrated perfectly:

The New York Police Department has confirmed to TPM that a cab driver in Manhttan was allegedly stabbed by a passenger  who asked if the cabbie was Muslim, and says the incident is being treated as a hate crime. The suspect has been charged with attempted murder and other crimes.

especially when you've got a date with The Levon Helm Band on Saturday...woo hoo!

Two and a half more days of bullsh*t till I get to the type of thing that makes the bullsh*t worth the effort...Calgon take me away!

Luckily I don't think it is possible for this afternoon to be worse than this morning...got my arse chewed out half a dozen times because one of our mfg's facilities is 8 weeks behind, standard 2 week lead times now 10 weeks...maybe the layoffs and paycuts weren't such a bright idea Mr. Big Shot, I don't know, whaddya think?

They done left a ton of money on the table, I can tell ya that...and their employees are tired are doing more for less, broken men and women answering the phones...starting to wonder if there is a coordinated work slow down effort going on at this particular manufacturing facility.

    Remember the Slater!

coaching session this morning.  Three very large city trucks with arrows indicating left lane of two lanes is closed. And one guy between the last two trucks shoveling asphalt into a very small pot hole.  No sign regarding stimulus funds at work.
