Cards' La Russa, Pujols, Plunge Into Politics: Stand With Glenn Beck

Earlier this year St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa decided to announce his support of AZ SB 1070. Free country. But what is not free is La Russa's attempt to pass off his appearance (with Albert Pujols) at the offensive Glenn Beck event tomorrow as "non-political." Missourian David Kuhn of TPM writes:

[W]hile I feel a twinge of disappointment, what really jumped out at me is that La Russa says he and Pujols agreed to appear because it's a non-political event. "I made it clear when we were approached: I said, 'If it's political, I wouldn't even approach Albert with it.' I don't want to be there if it's political," La Russa told the Post-Dispatch.

(Emphasis supplied.) La Russa is full of it. And no way he does not know it. That he has attached himself to one of the most offensive figures in American Media says a lot about La Russa. I do not know if Albert Pujols has any idea what La Russa has got him into. But shame on La Russa either way. He has every right to tarnish his own image with this Beck association. But he should not be dragging Pujols into it.

Speaking for me only

It is not a political event, it is a book signing event.

Beck is using Politics as a subterfuge to increase his bank account....

And I agree, I may not have been a fan, but I always respected the Cardinal organization. Not anymore.

LaRussa is his manager, not his father...he has no work obligation to attend Beck's shindig.

I tune in to see Pujols hit homers and LaRussa to coach. As long as they aren't wearing their political affiliation on the diamond or flying to these kinds of events in a Cardinals jet, who cares.

If Pujols wants to take a chance on his endorsements, it's his business. He's an adult and I'm sure LaRussa didn't twists his arm to go to this  "non-political" event.

They only have the name recognition because of their employment by the Cardinals. I can understand if the Cardinals have some concern for their organization based on employee going to political events, even if they aren't explicitly representing the Cards, the perception could be made that the Cards support Glenn Beck because LaRussa and Pujols are there.

If someone wants to support a douche, Republican or Democrat, it's your business. I just keep that stuff separate from what they do on the field.

if you actually pay attention to it. aside from FOX, i doubt it'll get much coverage. the five or so people who show up will quickly get bored, and go to the nearest starbucks for a latte'.

it will be interesting, on a purely psychological note, to see if mr. beck finally loses it in public. ordinarily, i assume he's just playing the rubes, for all the cash he can milk from them.

i think this may be his turning point, since he seems to have developed some kind of weird, messianic complex.
