Republicans Stall DREAM Act and DADT Repeal

Why am I not surprised? The Republicans have stalled consideration of the DREAM Act and the repeal of DADT.

Here's CBS on what's next.

how truimphant the "progressives" who sat out the Brown Vs Coakley election in MA are feeling now.....

Would have been 2 votes short even (none / 0) (#5)
by MO Blue on Tue Sep 21, 2010 at 08:58:56 PM EST
if Coakley was the Senator from MA instead of Brown.  Vote would have been 57 - 42 instead of 56-43.

that the Arkansas votes would have gone the way they did at the end if there was a better chance of reaching 60? Even if you cannot believe the President putting pressure, can you imagine former President Bill Clinton sitting down with Blanch Lincoln and telling her how she should vote if it came down to the wire?

Republicans short in that they are stealthy blocking the basic defense authorization bill, not the sidebar amendments. They may have become enlightened and refuse to continue to fund our military misadventures, the latest being Afghanistan which is getting worse by the day, and to curb the budding intervention in Yemen--and Iran bombing.

If nothing else, it may be a symbolic step to really support our troops by defunding unwise wars and bring them home. (protecting gays as well as Dream Act recruits in the process).  And, it goes without saying that they see blocking defense funding as among the best ways to deal with the budget deficits-a cause dear to their hearts, and to avoid cutting social security and Medicare.

    By golly, I think you made a great discovery (5.00 / 1) (#2)

Simple way to defund wars and too much defense spending. Just add DADT or the Dream Act to the legislation.

then, and only then, will you be open to accusations that you are not "supporting the troops."

    how about a "straight" vote (none / 0) (#6)
by diogenes on Tue Sep 21, 2010 at 09:11:55 PM EST
If the Democrats really wanted this to pass they could put it up as a single bill and a straight up and down vote.

    I'd much prefer.. (5.00 / 1) (#11)

single issue bills all the time, seems like the honest way to legislate to me...but I'm told "that's not how it works".

    No they couldn't (none / 0) (#7)

you can waste weeks of time getting an up or down vote on a bill, even if it has 60 votes.

Why would it take weeks? (none / 0) (#9)
by itscookin on Wed Sep 22, 2010 at 07:02:13 AM EST
Is it going to take a 2000 page bill? You aren't suggesting that it would take weeks to convince Democrats to vote for it, are you? As a standalone bill, there's even a Republican here or there who will vote for it.

It would take weeks of procedural hurdles (none / 0) (#10)

That's why they can't get widely acceptable judges confirmed either.

    I didn't see much a fight on this (none / 0) (#12)
by Militarytracy on Wed Sep 22, 2010 at 09:05:37 AM EST
Not a real fight.  I know they applied plenty of leverage behind the scenes though.  Wish Obama would not have picked a new Marine Corp Commandant who was against DADT and coming out saying so.  If this was so important?

No real fight though, that would have stirred up the Republican base even more.  If they lose either the House or the Senate the repeal is most likely dead.  This is just another God bleeping miscalculation on this administrations part.  Team of rivals and all that damned nonsense ate up all of our precious time and political will and power.  I'm deeply deeply disappointed in this administration today.  They failed our troops and all that that implies.

Overturning DADT is not and never has been even close to a priority for Obama. IMO DADT and the Dream Act being voted on at this time just more smoke and mirrors trying to drum up votes from interest groups that have run out of patience with the Dems. Don't think that the Dems ever thought the legislation would pass.

    I don't think it is a priority with them either (none / 0) (#15)

It is my understanding that JAG has been working overtime ironing out how to implement a repeal. I think much of the military leadership is serious about repeal. I suppose this stunt was pulled right now in order to appear serious in serving the base.  I understand if they don't want to do this right now....only adding fuel to an energized Republican base.  But if not now.....when?  This President has set us up to lose control of the House, so when can the repeal actually happen if it doesn't happen now?

Announcement a day after Blanche Lincoln voted with Republicans to deny cloture of the Defense bill containing DADT and the Dream Act:

Vice President Joe Biden travels to Boston Wednesday, where he's scheduled to team up with Sen. Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas.

A Democratic source tells CNN that the event is a fundraiser for the two-term Democratic senator, who faces a very difficult re-election bid this year. link

The Dream Act.....the repeal, they weren't serious about getting any of it.....they only wanted to appear serious.
