SEIU Backs Calif. Marijuana Legalization Measure

California's largest union, with 700,000 members, has endorsed Proposition 19, California's legislative initiative to legalize possession of marijuana for personal use.

The union did not say what resources it would provide along with its support.

Most union resources will go toward supporting Jerry Brown in the governor's race.

Other unions supporting the measure are the Northern California council of the International Longshore & Warehouse Union and Communications Workers of America Local 9415.

Some medical marijuana groups are now opposing the measure: [More...]

The California Cannabis Association said that Proposition 19 would inadvertently harm patients by allowing local governments to prohibit the sale and purchase of marijuana in their jurisdictions.

The group predicts many cities and counties would impose such a ban if voters approve the initiative, leaving local medical marijuana users with few options.

dispensaries just become regular marijuana stores if this passes?  What's the problem?  I don't get the objections...if a county should opt out of Prop 19, doesn't the old medical mj law still apply, shielding patients from John Law?

    Clearly the dispensaries (none / 0) (#4)

think that if this passes it'll hurt their business. Which makes sense, increased competition/supply usually does result in lower prices and lower margins.

if this passes they can legally sell to more customers, increasing business and profits...what am I missing?  Are they worried about the higher taxes eating into profits?  New dispensaries aka reefer stores and increased competition?  Like in NY where the liquor store lobby objects to allowing grocery stores to sell wine?

Sure, probably like liquor stores in NY. (none / 0) (#6)

And, if I were cynical, I would wonder if there isn't a large profit center in med MJ dispensaries in, um, "back door" sales that would go away if this bill passes. Pure conjecture on my part of course.
