Waiting for DKos 4

Daily Kos has been offline while it migrates to the new DKos 4. The migration is huge, and although it started at 9 am PT, it's still going on. What's taking so long?

Why is it taking so long to import the DK3 db into DK4? 939,000+ stories, 300,000+ registered users and over 40 million comments.

In the meantime, there's a twitter feed with some pretty funny explanations -- it's at #whydkosislate.

Since it will probably go live after I'm asleep, let me just say now, Welcome, DKos 4. Blog readers don't like change, so there will be grumblers, but if you've been following the migration news the past few months, it's evident that a huge amount of thought and planning (and probably cost) went into this new release. I'm hoping its a big success.

    A new site sucks.

It did appear to slow down my browser a bit more than the old site when I had 35 tabs open as well, but YMMV.

I like it. For those who think it has too much white or is too wide, there's a diary that says viewing it in portrait mode on the iPad is really good.

One thing I'm sorry to see them lose is the blogroll on the front page. TL has always gotten a lot of hits from DK, and I suspect that blogroll being gone will have an impact. If you have a page on DK, you can add your own blogroll, so remember to add TalkLeft if you want a quick way to get here from there.

has an iPad, Jeralyn.  Nor does everyone intend to get an iPad.  I think it has way too much white space.  He needs to lose the orange-colored font, too. (I don't care if orange has been his "thing" from the beginning, to the extent that people call it "The Big Orange."  It's an ugly color.)

It's ugly.  And no amount of insulting its readers' tastes and ability to handle change (as KOS has done in the past) will make it better.  But the ads are easier to spot now than ever before.  Of course that's likely the whole reason for this change.  The rest of the site is a total mess.  No designer worth a darn would ever have produced such junk.

pretty much gotten over DailyKos a long time ago (my User ID is under 50,000, which makes me a virtual ancient).  I do go over there on occasion to see what's going on, but I haven't commented in almost a year.  I doubt that this new format will make any difference to me whatsoever, and, in fact, may make me even less likely to take a peek.  But then, I guess I'm not their "target audience."  I wish Kos and company all the best, though.  Good luck to them.

I don't know why anyone would be upset. I'm not wild about it because it is hard to read. There are plenty of other blogs around that have much more interesting content like TL. I did post for a while but lately the site has just been major-ly boring

Maybe because I'm on the iPad at the moment. Maybe it just frames the white better or something, but it looks nice.

That is not to say i'll spend a lot of time there, but getting away from the 'big orange' look is a positive step.

I didn't see any ads. I wonder what I did right?

but I agree on getting away from the big orange and like the new look better. Doubt I'll ever do much more than I have in the past (scroll through the front page and move on) though :)

but a lot of sites, including the Gawker empire, have been redesigned lately.  I'm guessing devices like the iPad have something to do with it.  I'm not so fond of the look but, whatever.  At least DK redesigned better than Gawker did, eugh!

...but I would have recommended tinkering with the old rather than a total revamping.  I think Kos (and now his sports blog) SBNation grew by leaps and bounds because of its commenting software and automatic refreshing and also the chance to be a star by becoming a trusted user and being on the wreck list.
