Carolyn Goodman Elected Mayor of Las Vegas

My favorite mayor, Oscar Goodman of Las Vegas, is leaving the Mayor's office in good hands. On Tuesday, voters elected his wife, Carolyn Goodman, to succeed him.

Ms. Goodman became mayor with 61 percent of the vote in the nonpartisan contest Tuesday, defeating Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani of Clark County, who could not overcome the popularity of the self-proclaimed Happiest Couple in the Universe. Mr. Goodman, a former mob lawyer who gleefully presided over the city with a force of charisma and a bottle of Bombay Sapphire gin, could not run again because of term limits.

I can hardly believe it's been 12 years since Oscar was elected Mayor. How time flies. He must be one of the most popular Mayors ever -- he was re-elected in 2007 with 84% of the vote. I'm sure he's sad to be leaving the job, he's always said it was the most fun he's ever had.

Congratulations, Carolyn! I hope you have as much fun in the job as Oscar, that Las Vegans appreciate you as much as they did him, and that we criminal defense lawyers get to see a bit more of Oscar now.

Is that the City with those distressing stats? (none / 0) (#2)

where Oscar has been Mayor, and Carolyn will be?  Or the County of LV, where the casinos are?  I think I remember reading that, despite the hoopla and publicity, the Mayor's jurisdiction does not reach the neon-and-gambling tourist strip.

thanks for clarifying that (none / 0) (#4)

I hope Jeralyn's old friend Oscar has done all he can to fight those economic trends, and that his policies as mayor have not ignored or exacerbated them.  Presumably, given his large margins on re-election (and the support for his wife as his successor) the city's voters feel he's doing as good a job as he can, and do not blame him for what is going badly.

    Jeannette Rankin, of Montana (5.00 / 1) (#6)

voted against going to war not only in 1941 but also in 1917.  My grandmother, as a teenaged immigrant, marched with Rep. Rankin in 1919 for the right of women to vote.  In 1920, Rankin was a co-founder of the ACLU; many of the founders had been anti-war activists in WWI as well as suffragists.  I know her name well; she was held up as a hero by my grandmother, when I was growing up, for standing tall for what she believed was right.  And my grandmother was a key influence on me.

Many people seem to not like the idea but I think she is great for the job!

She has lived the life for so long and she has a great man by her side!
