    $1.8 billion do-it-yourself home... (none / 0) (#1)
by Edger on Wed Jan 25, 2012 at 09:36:02 PM EST
An unemployed Irish artist has built a home from the shredded remains of 1.4 billion euros ($1.82 billion), a monument to the "madness" he says has been wrought on Ireland by the single currency, from a spectacular construction boom to a wrenching bust.

Frank Buckley built the apartment in the lobby of a Dublin office building [...] using bricks of shredded euro notes he borrowed from Ireland's national mint.

"It's a reflection of the whole madness that gripped us," Buckley said of what he calls his "billion-euro home."

"People were pouring billions into buildings now worth nothing," he said. "I wanted to create something from nothing."

    [snip]

The walls and floor are covered in euro shreddings and the house is so warm Buckley sleeps without a blanket [...] "Whatever you say about the euro, it's a great insulator."

    Interesting.... (5.00 / 3) (#10)

    Something else I found interesting:

I watched a program several weeks ago (I think it as on MSNBC) where they conducted an experiment. The premise was: Could you build a house in America where every component of the house was American made?

They gave this assignment to a contractor and his experience was, yes, you could build a house here where every single part: every nail, screw, pipe, and shingle was American made.

The biggest surprise was, however, that it could be done and the total cost came in within 1% of a house built with Chinese, or other foreign, parts.

I wonder why this isn't bigger news?

That our "representatives" are drenched in, and consumed by, corruption hardly needs mention; it's so endemic it's practically apple pie.

But, if I'm a building contractor, "100% American Made" would be a pretty good competitive asset, no?

    I would say so, yes! (none / 0) (#13)

For any SME it's a good way to compete locally against and take away market share from multinationals, I'd think.

Florida Winner Take All (none / 0) (#2)

    Or not.

The split of Florida's delegates in the GOP primary may not be decided until the convention, as it is highly likely the losers have every right to challenge Florida's winner take all rule. This on top of the fact that Florida has 99 delegates but has already been reduced to 50 due to the date of the GOP primary.

Can't bear it. Deja vu all over again. (none / 0) (#3)

Many of the states this year have rules that are all over the place - not just Florida.

Maybe that's why Santorum is hanging in?

in some states, I read, regarding this splitting of delegates.  I haven't seen a recent update on the total that could be affected, but I would bet that you could be correct on strange alterations to standard strategies of the past.
