Macho Macho Man

I want to be a Macho Man:

Romney aides told BuzzFeed their polling indicates that Obama's biggest vulnerability among Hispanics is that he's viewed as a "weak leader." In much of Latino culture, they explained, political leaders are expected to demonstrate a macho bravado[.]

this culture stereotype, he could've started a war with iran, re-instated the draft, put all these "macho" latino men in the 82nd airborne, and dropped them over tehran. 95% would have been killed before landing, the other 5% taken prisoner. none would be able to vote. latino "macho male" voting problem solved.

    Actually, the American Military is (5.00 / 1) (#15)
by Mr Natural on Tue Oct 16, 2012 at 07:15:23 AM EST
a pretty good career choice for a lot of those disadvantaged by economics and education.  Latinos enter in droves to obtain education, experience, self respect, and for some, even citizenship.  Today's military is much less tolerant of bigotry than the general population. People can go as far as their drive and abilities allow.

when surrendering your free will to possibly become cannon fodder is what passes for a good career choice.

You're right of course, it is an out of poverty or bad circumstances for some, but it's f*ckin' sad.

if it's really what you wanna do with your life, god bless ya, pursue your happiness.

But lets not pretend some aren't signing up because they see/have no other options.  And that there are leaders who use and abuse this desperation to invade and occupy foreign lands for too few/no good reasons.

    I think the line about bigotry... (5.00 / 1) (#19)
by Dadler on Tue Oct 16, 2012 at 10:40:47 AM EST
...is vastly exaggerated in military life.  Because, on top of whatever else you think of it, the military, every branch, top to bottom, is an anti-creative institution, it loathes the individual's creative capacity to remake a social landscape, despises it when it really comes down to it.  Were that not the case, calling out your C.O. would be encouraged at all times.  If anything, I'd suggest bigotry of the sort I think you refer to, in the military, are simply more hidden, more clandestine, more forcibly internalized, because you're are working for a totalitarian employer, externalize them and die. I will say, however, that when you need people to uncritically offer themselves as cannon fodder, racism in recruiting and image is completely verboten.  In practice, I'm not so sure we can give the military a pass, in fact I know we can't from family experience. Also, I'd suggest it's a sort of hyper-bigotry that leads so many minorities into the military in the first place. The military is HAPPY to benefit from society's bigotry, and thus perpetuates it even if it looks as though, wow, the military is so colorblind.

It's not, it's sees all the colors it needs to in order to fill its body bags.  The military, if anything, is every problem in society writ worse, because it possesses so little to none of the creative powers that genuine freedom inspires in its populations.

at least part of the reason why leaders from Washington to  Lincoln looked askance at, or were completely opposed to the idea of "standing armies"..

Because of their tremendous potential for becoming an imposition on the spirit of democracy and the exercise of free thought. And because of the temptation to use them for the disasterous (for democracy) enterprise of empire building.

I guess stereotypes are just stereotypes right? Totally out of thin air? Tsk, demographics will tell. Probably some truth to this and thus Obama loses some hispanic support. Too bad, so sad.

The screwed up thing is that I'd almost feel like rubbing an Obama loss in the faces of a few posters here, but if I go to a place like say, "Neo-Neocon" , I'd almost want to do the same thing to the whiny Rommney supporters.
Congrats on both parties for making me hate and despise their lying, incompetent candidates.

I seriously doubt that others really much care for condescending and self-absorbed whiners like you, too.

But alas, unlike me, most people are simply too polite and well-mannered to say it to your face.

As a politician (and a partisan one at that), your respect means only just a tiny bit more to me than that of a garden slug.

I'd love to see you out of politics entirely. The US has far too many partisan pols who, even when they aren't corrupt, can't see the forest for the trees. Here's wishing you happiness in your personal life and total misery in your political one.

    According to the latest statewide poll ... (5.00 / 1) (#11)
by Donald from Hawaii on Tue Oct 16, 2012 at 04:37:24 AM EST
... in Arizona, conducted by Rocky Mountain after the Denver debate, President Obama is in a statistical dead heat with Mitt Romney, up 44% to 42% among likely voters but within the 4.4-point margin of error. Among registered voters, he hold a 45-40 advantage.

(I'd be remiss if I fauled note that in Arizona's Senate race, the same poll has Democrat Richard Carmona edging GOP Congressman Jeff Flake by a similar margin.)

The primary reason why Obama is competitive is the overwhelmingly lopsided margin of support (77% to 10%) he enjoys among Arizona's Hispanic community.

Romney's derisive quip at that upscale Boca Raton fundraiser last May, about his father having been born in Mexico to American parents, may not have garnered much attention in the so-called mainstream media. But the underlying anti-Mexican xenophobia engendered in both the remark itself, and the positive reaction it provoked in the crowd that night, did not go unnoticed by Latino communities across the country:

"My dad, as you probably know, was the governor of Michigan and was the head of a car company. But he was born in Mexico. And had he been born of Mexican parents, I'd have a better shot of winning this. (Crowd laughter.) But he was unfortunately born to Americans living in Mexico. He lived there a number of years, and I mean I say that jokingly, but it would be helpful to be Latino."

Needless to say, Republicans have already given Hispanic American voters any number of perfectly valid reasons to reject them soundly at the polls.

Further, I'd offer that this sort of naked pandering to a crude stereotype of Latinos -- which, let's face it, exists primarily as a product of your equally stereotypical white male Republican's most fevered, penis-envying imaginations -- rather than appealing to the best hopes and dreams of the Hispanic community, doesn't help their cause any.

Much more than Romney can ever muster.  I have a lot of respect for Obama, but he has made my life one hell of a lot saner.  It isn't a perfect peace, but it is much more peaceful than before Obama.  Romney will undo all of that, promises to and as CIC can get us into all sorts of trouble without much hinderance.  Nope.....not the same sort....not at all, and I'll be going with Obama!!!
