History Made in Colorado: Marijuana Reform Passes

Congratulations, Colorado! Amendment 64 has passed, 53% to 47%. The law becomes effective on the date of the official declaration of the vote by the Governor or December 6, whichever is earlier. The victory party is at Casselman's in Denver, and is open to the public.

Colorado is the first state to repeal state marijuana prohibition and replace it with a system of regulation and taxation. What becomes legal (from text of Amendment 64): [More...]

3) Personal use of marijuana. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, the following acts are not unlawful and shall not be an offense under Colorado law or the law of any locality within Colorado or be a basis for seizure or forfeiture of assets under Colorado law for persons twenty-one years of age or older:

a) possessing, using, displaying, purchasing, or transporting marijuana accessories or one ounce or less of marijuana.

(b) possessing, growing, processing, or transporting no more than six marijuana plants, with three or fewer being mature, flowering plants, and possession of the marijuana produced by the plants on the premises where the plants were grown, provided that the growing takes place in an enclosed, locked space, is not conducted openly or publicly, and is not made available for sale.

(c) transfer of one ounce or less of marijuana without remuneration to a person who is twenty-one years of age or older.

(d) consumption of marijuana, provided that nothing in this section shall permit consumption that is conducted openly and publicly or in a manner that endangers others.

(e) assisting another person who is twenty-one years of age or older in any of the acts described in paragraphs (a) through (d) of this subsection.

Major props to the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol, NORML, MPP, and Sensible Colorado, and the hundreds of volunteers who have been working on this effort for so many years.

The state of Washington today passed Initiative 502 to decriminalize possession of up to an ounce of marijuana. Mass. passed medical marijuana. Arkansas, which went for Romney, is predicted to defeat its medical marijuana initiative. The legalization measure in Oregon failed.

    marijuana legalization wins in Oregon.

This is not a medical marijuana measure. We already have that. This legalizes possession of up to one ounce by adults.

Correction: marijuana winning in WA, not OR. (none / 0) (#3)

...does about these new laws. When an re-election was coming, O chose to have his admin behave like mindless thugs. I think, since O seems to have no real intellectual or moral basis he won't compromise, he'll now let it slide. But let's not fool ourselves, O, when it comes to drugs and jailing non-violent offenders, is as big a empty useless jakeoff as any law and order Repub. And, hey, when it comes to presidential pardons he's the biggest acehole ever, granting far fewer than his predecessors.  More reason celebrating this re-election seems very odd to be for anyone who really cares about progressive, democratic causes.

    Yeah, well,maybe he'll legalize smoking (none / 0) (#8)
