    And judicial nominees - a mixed bag of results, at best.

    And to highlight the effects of this:

    Obama's decision not to nominate [Pamela] Karlan when his party enjoyed an enormous supermajority in the Senate is heartbreaking. Karlan is not simply one of the nation's top constitutional thinkers, she is both a leading expert in voting rights law and one of the nation's most skilled advocates for preserving the franchise. In light of the right's campaign to disenfranchise poor and minority voters through voter ID laws, restrictions on early voting, voter purges and efforts to keep voters from even registering to vote, the federal bench would benefit tremendously from someone like Professor Karlan who devoted much of her career to protecting people's constitutional right to vote.

    ... about teabaggers over the last few years, it's that they prefer to leave the stage feet-first. If Congressman Akin refuses to give up his GOP Senate nomination, there's really very little the rest of the GOP can do, other than try to distance themselves from him, as far away and as much as possible.

    Because we all know that Karl Rove and the RNC are such stalwart supporters of women's rights, particularly their right to reproductive freedom of choice -- right?

    You know, let's be honest here. The only reason that the mainstream GOP is now pressuring Congressman Todd Akin to step aside in the Missouri Senate race, is due to the fact that they find his uncompromising misogyny and inflammatory remarks to be rather inconvenient fodder for Democrats in the middle of an election campaign.

    However, that misogyny and those remarks are wholly and entirely consistent with the GOP's current behavior, as articulated in both the party's platform and its legislative agenda regarding a woman's right to reproductive choice and freedom.

    This is just another disgusting example of Republican hypocrisy at work. Todd Akins gets the shaft from the RNC and its allies, while his legislative partner-in-crime Paul Ryan -- Akin's co-sponsor in "The Sanctity of Life Act," which would redefine personhood as having commenced at the moment of conception -- gets the GOP's vice presidential nomination.

    The Republicans in 2012 are nothing if not a carload of malevolent clowns, embarked upon a neverending search for the perfect right-wing circus.

    ...in many ways I liked the follow-up single "Like An Old-Time Movie" even better.

    It's a shame a good singer and good voice like that didn't get more airplay after the first big single.

    Good news for Diana Nyad as she reaches the Gulf Stream which will start to sweep her much quicker towards her destination. Currently the Gulf Stream gets within about 17 miles of Key West, so as she crosses it she'll also have the effect of a wind in her sail as she heads northeast with the current moving at a little over 5mph.

    Last night's storm added an estimated 6 hours to the trip, but good weather the rest of the way (and another non-jelly night) could still get her to shore before nightfall tomorrow in time for a nap before the start of her 63rd birthday.

    For those counting, she's been in the water for just over 50 hours.

    Diana is amazing.

    ... San Pedro's Vincent Thomas Bridge into L.A. Harbor yesterday afternoon. Reportedly, the "Top Gun" director was suffering from terminal brain cancer.

    What a shame. This is why I support "Death with Dignity" legislation. Nobody with a terminal illness should ever have to feel compelled to jump off a bridge in order to finally end their own pain and suffering. My condolences to his family and friends.

    ... by the principal of Prague High School in Oklahoma, after she inadvertantly used a mild expletive -- "How the Hell should I know? I've changed my mind so many times" -- in her graduation remarks.

    Word is that Kaitlin Nootbar has no intention of apologizing in writing, as has been demanded by school superintendent Rick Martin.

    seeing hundreds of valedictorians decline the honor, lest it cost them their high school degrees.

    I will settle for seeing this principal apologize.  And go back to being the vice principal (and, no doubt, the wrestling coach; in my kids' schools, the two were as one, for fascinating reasons).

    the megalomaniac wants to swap the private land that cuts through his "town" for property in Dinosaur National Park and near Blue Mesa.  

    On the surface that seems like an OK deal for us 99%'ers, but given the push by the Koch brothers and their ilk to expand drilling on public lands to include national parks and monuments (or just sell them off at a bargain basement price), it more of a win/win for him.  Koch gets his isolated compound and most likely gets to exploit the land he swaps to do so.
