Disaster struck me last week (I'll calculate the details for you later.) But today is a new day. Much more reliant on Sagarin, the picks:

    According to the NYT,  House Budget Chair, Republican financial heavyweight, and Romney's running mate, also filed his tax return (amended) yesterday.  Ryan disclosed that he and his wife had initially failed to report $6l, 122 in income from 2011.

    Ryan claimed the failure was inadvertent.  The change increased the Ryans total income to $323,416 and raised their taxes by $19,917 to $64,674 (20 percent adjusted gross income.)    The Ryans owed a penalty of $59 for the original underpayment.  The Ryans explained that they had overlooked their income from the Prudence Little Trust (Mrs. Little who died in 2010, was Mrs. Ryan's mother.)

    Gee, that must have been really tough for him, to pay that $59 penalty for trying to hide over $61,000 of income. Oddly enough, when I ran my last business, I once got hit with a penalty for not making one of my quarterly estimated payments -- and the penalty was more than $59. (And my yearly net income was quite a bit less than $61,000.)

    I don't regret never having a facebook account.

    The problem is, you don't need to be subscribed to an account to have your privacy invaded by facebook's f***booking policies.

    For those who do have accounts, you can now opt-in to being surveilled by cameras and I.D. tagged whenever you go shopping or go out to eat:

    Several independent application developers are experimenting with how to use facial recognition technology in the real world, and have sought to use pictures on Facebook to build products of their own.

    For example, one company in Atlanta is developing an application to allow Facebook users to be identified by cameras installed in stores and restaurants. The company, Redpepper, said in a blog post that users would have to authorize the application to pull their most recent tagged photographs. The company said its "custom-developed cameras then simply use this existing data to identify you in the real world," including by offering special discounts and deals.

    Sounds like harmless fun, huh?

    idiots who opt in to this.  They will probably think this is fun.  These will be some of the same people who post every waking thought and action on Twitter and Facebook, and text and cell phone their friends constantly to tell them where they are and what they're doing.
    News flash for these people: nobody, but nobody, is as interested in your life and thoughts as you think they are.  And it's a really bad idea to let anyone I.D. tag and surveille you in public.  I don't want the government doing it (although that may be a losing battle) and I don't want commercial entities doing it.

    that I'm just not interested - but the other thing is that I honestly can't figure facebook  out. I don't know what it is or how it works.
    I just keep seeing references to it - and twitter. @@@. Another thing in which I have zero interest.

    I'll get along - but I know it's a world out there.

    I also don't know what apps are.

    seem to have caused him a big enough problem that he dumped his $77,262+ stake over the summer -- undoubtedly, as his accountants were finagling his 2011 tax return. He and Lady Anne made a profit of $8,138 on that dumped investment. I guess it's tough to figure out what patriotism means when you're so greedy.

    Romney's turning out to be quite the tap dancer. Forget flip-flops. Fuh-lap, shuffle is where it's at with this guy.

    I was chapped reading about it until my husband says that it isn't men's penises that are getting smaller, it is their balls.  And it's because we keep them in our purses next to our cell phone :)

    Cubs fans have not had many chances for baseball happiness this season, or most seasons. So, any win is an amazing win for us. A win over the Cardinals, though, is especially sweet.

    And yesterday the Cubs beat the Cards 5-4 in extra innings. My little baseball heart jumped with joy.

    I believe that, here at TL, only ruffian and I have copped to being Cubs fans, lifelong long-suffering, ever hopeful Cubs fans. So, Yea! for our team.

    read Cary Tennis over at Salon - he does an advice column that often has some interesting dilemmas/problems - but he has written a "letter" to Mitt Romney: "Dear Mitt, You Walk Funny," that so perfectly describes how I've been feeling about Mitt when I watch him, and I thought you all - or most of you all - might agree.

    Here's a bit of it:

    I think it's your hips. I saw you on television yesterday on a platform and you turned to your left and it looked like you being rotated on a lazy Susan.  You take tiny steps like a little ballerina. Your torso doesn't bend.     Big win by FSU over Clemson.  Unbelieveable game.  Trick plays and fake field goal by Clemson, great individual performances, a come from behind victory.

    Everything. The more I hear him, the more I realize he's a dipsh*t windbag with no ability to laugh at himself. And even his "good" movies now seem like garbage to me.  Do we REALLY think a guy with Eastwood's limited intellect and lack of self-critical ability was the best to make a movie about, say, Charlie Parker? I remember seeing an original play in college, written by an MFA student, that ran circles around Eastwood's movie. Men like Eastwood are limited but appealing for their macho tough bullsh*t exterior. Their appeal, however, can never, EVER, make up for their rational and creative limitations. In fact, it can only hurt them in the long run, because it keeps people like that from ever really evolving creatively.

    I turned on my TV and found the Beavers vs. Bruins game rich there on ABC. I was quite surprised.

    And now that is the game I am watching.

    Whenever the Warriors and Wolf Pack get together, it's most always an intriguing matchup. Most of the games between them aren't usually decided until the final minutes. Two years ago, UH dealt Nevada its only loss in a stellar 13-1 season, which enabled the Warriors to claim a conference co-championship with the Pack and Boise State (which beat UH the following week, but lost to Nevada two weeks later).

    So, BTD has taken Arizona over Oregon +23 (seriously, Arizona over Oregon?).

    Do I understand this correctly that for BTD to win this Oregon must lose by no more than 22 points? Or is it that Arizona can lose by no more than 22 points? Or is it something else all together?

    I carefully bookmarked CoralGables explanation of all this last week, but I find that in rereading it, I still don't get the +thing.

    I think I get that in the Notre dame-Michigan game (ND -5) if ND loses by no more than 5, BTD still wins.

    Arizona +23 would mean Arizona is winning the game 23-0 when they do the coin toss. Therefore if Oregon would win by 24 or more points BTD would lose the bet.

    Notre Dame is -5. Therefore Notre Dame is losing the game 5-0 at kickoff. For BTD to cash he needs Notre Dame to win the game by 6 or more points.

    Yesterday it looks like BTD finished in a light shade of terra cotta rather than one of the fifty shades of grey and far from the extremes of scarlet or jet black

    On the day it looks like a record of 11-12 and down 2 units.

    I'm watching the game on my tablet, waiting to enter Aloha Stadium. The Volunteers can certainly move the ball on the Zips, but Akron's offense has answered them, blow for blow. If the Zips can somehow pull the upset, it would cap a good day for the MAC in inter-conference play.

    seems like a repeat of CF 2011 -- the same two ovoverfed and inbred SEC teams on top and likely, once again, to play for the championship.  The Big 10 still mediocre with Ohio St maybe an exception.  

    PAC-12 about the same -- Ducks on top but maybe not enough balance on offense (improved but not great passing game) to beat a really good defense like Alabama.  USC disappointing, Stanford good but not a powerhouse, UCLA interesting but not yet consistently good.

    That's my assessment anyway from having missed watching games the last two Saturdays but feeling I haven't really missed much.

    I welcome competing points of view.

    If I was predicting, the championship game would match up with one from each side:

    (I post in most likely order to advance as of today IMO)

    Alabama or Georgia or LSU or South Carolina or Florida

    Just 4 games into the season there are still about 26 undefeated teams. Based on scheduling, it's damn hard for more than 2 of the mentioned 11 to remain that way.

    note: I only mention Florida because they are still undefeated and four (and possibly five) of the other ten teams mentioned here are on their schedule and they would have to beat them all.

    there isn't any God.  Hard to root for a team with its own special network contract.

    And isn't it ironic ND football is headed north while the Church is headed south.  Ten years from now Notre Dame might be the only one still standing.

    "The Mormon Candidate" last night on TV. They had some evangelicals on saying that they would not vote if it was Romney vs. Obama. The documentary overall was not very flattering to Mormonism and they even found a cousin of Mitt's who had left LDS. If the tactics that they are talking about are true, then The LDS Church does operate very much like a cult.

    and they are dissing Romney every chance they get, speaking out on his religion, too.  I was shocked.  

    Read yesterday that when the AARP conventioneers weren't booing Ryan they were giving him nothing but stony silence.  

    I'm beginning to feel better about the election.

    Colorado Springs.  The drought has wiped them out.  They sold all their beef cattle, everything...not one cow left.  Because of the drought and lack of any rain, they still can't feed the irrigated alfalfa they grew.  They tested it and the nitrates in it are so high that cows eating it everyday will eventually die.

    Cow cake is running $800 a ton and it isn't even winter, and hay from elsewhere is running from $200 to $800 a ton based on quality.

    Everyone else is facing selling all their cattle as well, some around him already have and some hope that something will shake free but the dept of AG told him they anticipate this drought cycle continuing for at least three more years.

    This summer when it was 100 degrees out on the plains he said that they had several days in a row of tremendously strong blowing wind.  It is always windy out there, so for him to say something like that it is significant.

    If Kansas can't grow corn though he thinks we are all going to be in trouble.  For how long who knows?

    I mean, it is nice if some can supplement their grass, I think everyone needs to understand that the grass on the plains is non existent in some places and it will get worse.  My family is less than 100 miles from the Western Kansas border too, so watching the extreme drought affects spread.  It will eventually hit Missouri if this drought indeed keeps it up but it isn't there yet in the same fashion..  The western portion of Kansas is being baked to oblivion.  A cow can probably be supplemented something crazy like gummy worms but it can't live off of them.

    My state scored hottest in the country in terms of the margin of difference from norms.  And when we traveled across the state this summer, driving across the state, the fields were fried.  Much of these crops were for cattle feed, and I said then that we would lose even more small farms -- because farmers were having to send their cattle out of the area, even then, paying to board them elsewhere because feed corn could not be found at almost any cost.  At some point, boarding costs make it more efficient to just send the cattle to slaughter, take the loss, and sell the land.

    If we were meatlovers, I would do what my parents used to do:  Buy a quarter of a steer, have it butchered, put it all in the freezer now.  Prices are going to soar even more this winter.

    It takes many years to rebuild your herd too when the crisis is over, if this crisis does indeed end in 3 or 4 years.  For years ranchers will keep their heifers, only sell their steers.  Sometimes they trade bulls with each other vs. buying new bulls because there would be too much inbreeding in your herds.  But friends can help each other.

    This happened to my family and all of the ranchers out East of Colorado Springs after the 1977 blizzard.  All the cattle suffocated in the deep snow.  It took about five years to build herds again.  There were problems finding enough cows to purchase for starter herds.  They hauled the dead bodies of the cows out in dump trucks.

    There is a grassland loss subsidy I'm told.  The local CO-OP has gone broke too he said.
