Report: One Boston Marathon Suspect is Dead

Update 4:30 a.m: Latest reports: There has been an official impromptu news conference. The MIT officer is dead, another officer is in surgery. It began with a robbery at a 7/11, followed by the killing of the MIT officer in his car, a carjacking of a Mercedes and a car chase to Watertown. One suspect, reportedly the one in the black hat in the FBI photo, is dead. The suspect in the white hat is at large. Police have surrounded a commercial building in Watertown. [More...]

Earlier:

Update 4:00 a.m: There are now unconfirmed reports the guy in the photo above (and the naked guy put in a police car, see below) was an "innocent" and the suspect actually taken into custody has died at a hospital. If this is true, once again, the media has done a dismal job. For three hours, a local TV station in Boston identified the person in the above photo as the suspect taken into custody, made to disrobe and then put in a police car. Over and over the reporters stressed how smart the police were to make him disrobe first. As of this moment, it's unclear whether the person depicted above was the one taken into custody, or whether the person who was taken into custody is alive or dead. So please read the remainder, live-blogged from a local Boston news station, for what it is: a local news report.

The Boston Globe is reporting one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects is in custody in Watertown. (Headline here.) They are still searching for the second suspect.

Other reports say that there is no confirmation that the events of tonight are related to the bombing.

Every police agency is now in Watertown: Feds, local, tactical units and bomb details. MIT has been declared safe.

Sirens are still screaming at 3:00 a.m. At 2:40 a.m. police confirmed they are looking for a second suspect. There haven't been any more shots for a while.

The FBI released this much clearer photo of the two suspects today. [More...]

Here's a smaller version. Notice the cop right in front of them.

Update: 3:13 a.m.: All the police vehicles and tactical units have just moved out to a different location. The media assumes they got a new location for the second suspect.

To recap: A few hours after the FBI released the grainy photos, there was a disturbance call at M.I.T. An officer investigating the disturbance was shot and killed. There was a carjacking, and the carjacking suspects went to Watertown, where a lot of gunfire was exchanged and explosives could be heard. One suspect was taken into custody. He's alive because there is now video of him being made to take off his clothes and being led naked into the back of a police car. The second suspect is at large.

Despite the Globe's announcement, there has been no official confirmation that tonight's events are related to the bombing on Monday. Nor has it been established that the men in the FBI released photos are responsible for the bombings. They are only suspects.

The FBI only says the situation is ongoing, and they are working to determine what happened tonight.

Update 3:45 am: Headline of the Boston Globe has changed, but still reports one Marathon bombing suspect is in custody and the other is at large.

Update 4:30 am: The Boston Globe changes its headline again, to report the suspect taken into custody is dead.

That the cop, facing away from the suspects, at an event with a million people, where nothing has happened yet, should have known to turn around and profile two Muslim men standing on a street corner?

And our fellow human beings, on the whole, are incompetent observers of human behavior, thus you end up with situations like this. We all hide things from each other, the more profound the thing, the harder we hide it. You'd never know, meeting me, for example, that at 10 years old I was driven so insane by my abusive first stepfather that I plotted, seriously, to murder him for about two months. Never got the "courage" to do it, still feel like my little brother is phucked up because I didn't "save" him by killing his father, and the rage it fills me with, subconscious particularly, is astounding in its implications in my life. Intense sh*t, and a lot of people carry equally intense sh*t around with them all their lives, especially if it occurred when they were young.

Never be surprised at the ability of human beings to hide themselves in broad daylight, or for their particular and individual rages to come out by hurting others.

The bigger surprise is... (none / 0) (#57)

One suspect still at large. Residents advised to remain in homes, call 911 for anything unusual, open doors only if uniforms visible. I think he said a twenty block perimeter around the site of the shootout.

Boston Police Commissioner Edward F. Davis said the man now known as Marathon bombing Suspect #2, the man with the white baseball cap who actually dropped the bombs at the race finish line, is the person being sought by a massive collection of federal, state, and municipal police.

I was wondering how they knew that this "suspect", "actually dropped the bombs at the race finish line".

I could find no information about that.
I would suppose that there is some video to show that.

I also would have to say that I am astounded that suspects in a highly publicized murder would, instead of laying low, rob a convenience store and carjack a Mercedes - thereby alerting everyone of their presence...

These guys weren't so highly trained, had no exit plan, and had no money.  Only when their photos were shown did they realize the jig was up and tried to get out of town.  Notice they did not "marytr" themselves, and the fact that they tried to rob a 7-11 tells you 1) they are not criminal masterminds and 2) they probably were not financed by a highly organized group.

He could have blown himself up instead of letting the police kill him too. The guy has had at least two chances to do the suicide thing and has not. So right now it is pointing against that type of thing.

there was an interview/news conference (my station was re-broadcasting a Boston station) with one of the doctors from the hospital where the dead suspect was taken.  The doctor said:
         (a) the person came into the hospital in cardiac arrest
         (b) the doctors worked on him for 10-15 minutes (before recognizing the futility and pronouncing him dead)
         (c) he had (1) multiple gunshot wounds
                    (2) blast injuries to his entire trunk (consistent with blowing himself up with some explosive device) and
                    (3) had been run over.
         (d) the doctors don't and can't know whether the person they're working on is a victim, alleged perp, or cop, so they treat everyone equally when it comes to emergency treatment.

Anyway, unless we are talking about klan activity most American terrorists are "lone wolf" types.
What is interesting to me is that as far as Muslim terrorism goes there is a trend to people acting alone.  It is almost as if there is this message coming from the middle east, from the radical Muslim leaders "we aren't going to organize you or fund you or train you.  There is information out there to build bombs, to buy guns.  You know that western culture is evil. You want to be one of us, to be favored by Allah, then what are you waiting for?"
The CIA and Homeland security got too good at stopping organized plots attached to the names of big players.  Freelance attacks are the order of the day now.  But people here and on facebook and in the media seem to think that means this is not "Islamic Terrorism".  To me, it is just new wave Islamic terrorism.

a McVeigh type deal-- 1st) We wouldn't need to go crazy on a crackdown on immigrants, Muslims, etc and/or go to war (the last of these would only happen if state sponsorship and/or cooperation came to light-- while Gore, Clinton, Obama, etc would have probably invaded Afghanistan if 9-11 had still occured it takes a neo-con moron to invade Iraq). 2) Fear-- if this turns out to be more than just two kooks who read an Iman online, if its actually planned in someway its a scary turn- one of the things that made Al Queda so successful as a brand was spectacular attacks, while shifting to small-scale one or two man cells is less flashy than 9/11 or the orginal WTC bombing, its also a lot harder to stop.

Just as it would be foolish to ignore the ideology that drove these dirtbags:

-- July 2008: Jim David Adkisson - killing two churchgoers and wounding four others.

-- October 2008: Daniel Cowart and Paul Schlesselman arrested in a plot to murder dozens of African-Americans, culminating in the assassination of President Obama.

-- December 2008: "Patriot" movement radicals Bruce and Joshua Turnidge, who wanted "to attack the political infrastructure" -- kill two police officers with a bomb.

-- December 2008: James Cummings, agitated by the election of Obama, building a "dirty bomb" in his basement.

-- January 2009: Keith Luke - raping and wounding a black woman and killing her sister, then killing a homeless man before being captured by police as he is en route to a Jewish community center.

-- February 2009: A Marine named Kody Brittingham is arrested and charged with plotting to assassinate President Obama. Brittingham also collected white-supremacist material.

-- April 2009: Richard Poplawski, believing President Obama intended to take away the guns of white citizens like himself, kills 3 police officers.

-- April 2009: Joshua Cartwright, similarly fearful of Obama's purported gun-grabbing plans, kills two deputies.

-- May 2009: Scott Roeder walks into a church in Wichita, Kansas, and assassinates abortion provider Dr. George Tiller.

-- June 2009: A Holocaust denier and right-wing tax protester James Von Brunn opens fire at the Holocaust Museum, killing a security guard.

-- March 2010: Seven militiamen arrested for plotting to assassinate local police officers with the intent of sparking a new civil war.

-- March 2010: A "sovereign citizen" from Georgia is arrested in Tennessee and charged with plotting the violent takeover of a local county courthouse.

-- May 2010: A still-unidentified white man walks into a Jacksonville, Fla., mosque and sets it afire, simultaneously setting off a pipe bomb.

-- May 2010: Two "sovereign citizens" named Jerry and Joe Kane gun down two police officers who pull them over for a traffic violation, and then wound two more officers in a shootout in which both of them are eventually killed.

-- July 2010: Byron Williams - attempting to attack the offices of the Tides Foundation and the ACLU, shooutout with officers wounding two.

-- September 2010: Justin Carl Moose arrested for plotting to blow up an abortion clinic.

And on, and on, and on ...

    Like this attack.

Should I list all the terrorist acts by jihadists?

Sorry it didn't turn out the way you had hoped.

killed just as many as these people did in Boston. Is it somehow better if the person professes to be a Muslim? Terrorism is terrorism and this particular one seems to be some sort of hybrid because they were home grown terrorists. Are you not supposed to mention other terrorism in this country?

Terrorism is terrorism. We have a home grown problem with it and it's called radical fundamentalism whether it be Muslim or Christian. They all think that God speaks directly to them and they are doing His work.

You keep accusing people of "hoping" it was a domestic terrorist.  I was doing no such thing.  My point - since you apparently had trouble understand it - was that AAA's snide comment about the "amish not being involved" was silly.  Of course no one suspected the Amish.  He then said "On the other hand it would be foolish to ignore the ideology that drove these two dirtbags" - (in his mind, presumably he meant Islam or radical Islam).  My point was that there are plenty of homegrown wingnut, radicals who have demonstrated their willingness to engage in violence over the past few years.

    Happy to help.
