Jared Polis: The Most Internet Friendly Congressman

Jared Polis is one of my favorite Congresspersons. (Unfortunately, I don't get to vote for him because he's not in my district.) Kevin Collier of the Kernel and The Daily Dot writes about Jared today:

Jared Polis (D-Colo.) may be the most Internet-friendly congressman in history. He certainly has the credentials: A former Web entrepreneur, he’s the first openly gay parent in congressional history, a proponent of legalizing marijuana, an active redditor, and a League of Legends gamer. He’s also long accepted campaign contributions in Bitcoin, the booming cryptocurrency.

He says Jared has "assembled what is essentially the best Internet freedom voting record possible" and then lists Jared's accomplishments. They are too long too quote, but quite impressive, so please read the article. [More...]

The past few years, I've mostly covered Jared's support for medical and recreational marijuana. But his stand for internet freedom and privacy is very important. According to Colorado Pols, Jared's seat is very secure. But people still need to vote. So if you're in his district, make your voice heard and be sure to vote for Jared.

    ...but the link.

I remember the first time I got online.  UW-Milwaukee allowed users to dial into the University and all that was available was BBS, bulletin board systems.  I think you could find information about registering and classes, but the online stuff was the mind boggling.  I could not comprehend the number of news groups and how infinite that information was.  Which now is a microscopic sliver of what is available.

It was pure text, with pictures that could be downloaded, sight unseen.  It was wild stuff, and I remember some sort of multiplayer game that was pure text based.  You would have to type, 'go left' or whatever you wanted to do.   I found that irritating and never got into it.  But I remember downloading pictures, you think your getting what was described, often getting something adult, that would take like 2mins to download a tiny file.

Unlike Polis, I haven't the foggiest idea what my first online handle was.  But I do remember how magnificent it was to communicate with people all over the world and how lucky I was that one of my good friend was the guy behind it all at the University.  A guy at the time who was just plain out-there, who today is the typical computer nerd slash hacker.

    I too wished I was in his district (none / 0) (#2)

when I lived there...actually I think he may have been elected around the time I left, but I was happy to see it. Wish we had more like him

For those who don't know, his internet roots go back to marketing the greeting cards his mother, artist Susan Polis-Shutz, was famous for in the 70s-80s.  They were always some of my favorites.

I still have two of their Blue Mountain (none / 0) (#3)

books I got in Ann Arbor in 1971. (Susan's husband Stephen is the graphic artist for them.) I was really surprised when I found out he was their son. Here's her bio. Blue Mountain's website is here, and their facebook page has a lot more. Their stuff is so distinctive, and just looking at the book covers brings back a lot of memories. Thanks for reminding me.

Blue Mountain...it escaped me and I did not take time to look it up.

I haven't looked at their stuff for a long time. Will check it out.

Never heard of that e-card company. Evidently, they have been in the news for allegedly processing non authorized charges against credit cards and continuing charges after requests for cancellation of services.

Well, unfortunately, they are not the only company that has done this.
Do they make it up to their wronged customers by sending them some Jamaican Mountain Blue coffee?   ;-)
