Democratic Debate Live Blog

I just got home and have seen none of the preliminaries. Thus, I am untainted.

I'll post my thoughts periodically throughout the debate. No stenography so if you want to know what is being said word for word, you'll have to watch.

Update (Jeralyn): I just got home as well and will chime in in comments. Thanks, BTD!

0-0 in the 2nd.

You think Anderson Cooper rolled some dice last night?

Ugh "we teamed up with FaceBook." I'm tired already.

Jim Webb lives!

0-0 in the 3rd.

Omigawd CNN is determined to bore us to death.

2 minute opening statements. zzzz.

I''m also tweeting really HIlarious stuff here

Bernie gives his stump speech. It's a good one though.

Hillary very polished delivery not surprisingly.

First question TPP, Cooper load it with the "say anything" crap. But Cooper is not tough enough it doesn't work from him.

Clinton answer is fine.

SOSHULIST!!!!

I'll have to think about Sanders' answer a little bit.

Interesting interplay between Sanders and Clinton on SOSHULISM! she defended him but differentiated as well. Pretty deft.

Bernie getting hit on guns.

Hillary hitting him on guns!

Everybody hammering Bernie on guns!

Hillary pretty happy with this debate so far.

Hillary plays Obama card! Really smart!

Hillary owning this debate.

Now Libya, Hillary dead wrong on that one. Imo. No one agrees with me. Webb does apparently.

I'm taking break too.

Thnk you Bernie

I'm calling the fight. Hillary by TKO. Now wants 60 debates, not 6.

by Donald from Hawaii on Tue Oct 13, 2015 at 09:31:16 PM EST
Bernie Sanders is now 73 years old. He was 24 or 25 at the time he applied for CO status. That was nearly a half-century ago, and IMHO it serves no useful purpose whatsoever to resurrect up old and unresolvable matters related to what was an incredibly divisive issue at the time. Again, the Vietnam War is over. Let's please give it a rest.

Republicans have got absolutely nothing else to run on, save for attacking Planned Parenthood and a woman's right to reproductive choice, allowing bigots to continue to discriminate against the LGBT community, and banning burkas and Sharia Law. And that's how Democrats need to answer that.

    A conscientious objector, under the law (5.00 / 4) (#200)
by Peter G on Wed Oct 14, 2015 at 12:57:30 PM EST
must be opposed, by reason of religious or equivalent beliefs, to participation in war "in any form" - not selective. Many applied for CO status during the Vietnam era who did not meet that standard. Most were denied, but some were (mistakenly or whatever) granted. And the courts kept modifying and reinterpreting the test, so it was not improper to apply, say what you (thought you) believed, and see how they ruled. Plus, you were doing it, at that time, at age 18. Most people have evolved/changed their beliefs in one or more significant ways between the ages of 18 and 70, I would think. I applied for CO in 1967 when I was 18, my claim was never ruled on because I was a college student (for the next few years); then I drew a high draft lottery number, which made everything else moot. What I said on my application is what I believed then. I wonder how much of it I would agree with now, if I re-read it.

I do not judge US military who refused to deploy to Iraq because they considered it an unjust and illegal war, but many went to prison attempting to claim CO status because they were refusing to deploy into a specific war. Where was Sanders in defending THEM? He also funded the Iraq War. He might not have voted for the AUMF but he funded the Iraq War and that kept the meat grinder going and sent refusing soldiers to prison.

So I would knock those two off of the debates stages immediately. A debate between the final three might work. They have finally got to me as they overtalk and everything is turning to mumble jumble. a chance getting these things through congress as a Senator as he would as president in the current environment. How is that going?

    Sanders is powerless as a senator (5.00 / 1) (#194)
by Juanita Moreno on Wed Oct 14, 2015 at 10:16:19 AM EST
How hard is it for the billionaire class to buy 60 senators? From the looks of our contemporary plutocratic policies that continue to make the rich richer, I'd say the oligarchy owns more than half of Congress and a president as well. With Obama, they've got themselves someone who our side is unwilling to fight against when he embeds insurance company profits between us and our healthcare, increases endless war profiteering well beyond Bush's achievements, continues massive environmental destruction while appeasing the left with crumbs, pursues hero whistleblowers instead of banksters and billionaire tax evaders, and perpetuates the Bush-era loss of privacy rights while the militarization of the police subdues public dissent.

Mr. Transparency even has a secret UNfair trade agreement that will likely destroy the rest of our middle class and most of the public safety, worker's rights and environmental protections we've fought for over the past two centuries.

As a senator, Bernie Sanders stands against left wing sellouts. But without sixty more like him in Congress, we'll continue down the road of environmental destruction and the undermining of our democracy.

As President, Bernie can forward every progressive change he stands for. He's not like Obama who convinced progressives to vote for him, then told us to sit back and HOPE he actually meant what he said. Bernie wants a political movement behind him, which, coincidently, is what we want too.

If we build a truly progressive movement along with Bernie's campaign, then use that movement to support him as President, we'll create the Change we Hoped for back in 2008. It might take a while, but we can effectively fire a third of Congress every two years if we have to. This movement is what many of us have waited for our entire lives. It's our chance to take back our government from the stranglehold of the rich and powerful.

This is the vision that is bringing millions of disaffected Democrats back into our Party and even more voters who've never joined us in the past, especially our youth. If we squander this opportunity by electing yet another corporatist who hooks us in with social issues but continues to elevate the billionaires who buy our government, our once powerful middle class will be gone and our country will be structured like any other third world nation. That's the end game of the TPP and people who've figured out it's more profitable to buy Democrats than Republicans.

I thought his enemy soldier who wounded him comment was sincere, but he forgets these are Democrats. When you tell them you served your nation with a humble and glad heart, they take you at your word and they are onto the next issue :) There will be no pedestal for you Webb. They won't even give you a sword to fall on :) It just isn't their lizard brained blood gargling thang.

Democrats do not pay attention to war heroics. When Kerry ran, it was a footnote with Democrats that he was a purple heart recipient. If we had been better prepared to defend him, that might have helped, but war wounds just aren't our thing. It just isn't what Democrats think defines a great leader.

It was aproppriate for Sanders to thank Webb for his service, but Webb wants his service and the fact that he was wounded to be considered major criteria for voting for him.

If a military leader wants to point out running successful missions that decreased bloodshed, Democrats will add that to your resume and shop that around pretty hard. But not this whining and this focus on being wounded and how that guy isn't around anymore. Not the leadership Democrats are looking for.

certainly grabbed my attention. Nobody else in the debate could truthfully say that. If Webb were the frontrunner I suppose he would be swiftboated.

He's got the military mindset down. If you tried to swiftboat him he could verbally kill you with two fingers and a tiny bit of pressure. Kerry doesn't have that mindset. He's a negotiator, a statesman, when they came for his scalp he didn't know exactly how to confidently take them down.

But if they tried swiftboating Webb and the rest of us were slow to jump on board and support him, maybe they could get it done.

    No, they're not.

Vietnam was not WWII, and if the only way a young man could avoid complicity in that inhumane, murderous, and completely unnecessary criminal enterprise was to apply for C0 status, as my grandfather used to say, I'd shake his hand and give him a cigar.
