Execution Inmate Poked for 30 Minutes, No Usable Veins

Ohio began the process of executing Alva Campbell, a 69-year-old inmate with medical problems yesterday morning. The executioners jabbed him with needles for 30 minutes, in his arm and below his knee, trying to find a usable vein to inject him with the lethal drugs. They couldn't find one. At 9:40 a.m, the reporters were told to leave the room, and the execution was halted.

Gov. John Kasich has rescheduled the state-ordered killing for June, 2019. Why that date? Unknown. [More...]

His health problems:

He has suffered from breathing problems related to a decades-long smoking habit. His attorneys said he has required a walker, relied on a colostomy bag and needed breathing treatments four times a day.
Prison officials planned to bring him into the death chamber in a wheelchair. ....He has chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder as the result of a decadeslong two-pack-a-day smoking habit, a prisons doctor has said.

His background:

Campbell was regularly beaten, sexually abused and tortured as a child, his attorneys have argued in court filings and before the Ohio Parole Board.

An AP reporter who was present writes:

Informed the execution was being called off, the condemned man shook hands with two members of the team and wiped away tears. “This is a day I’ll never forget,” Campbell said, according to Stebbins.

Campbell had requested he be executed by firing squad. The courts rejected his request.

poking with the needles and the whole idea of a 69-year-old in prison for decades to be executed.

the u.s. constitution is too old. it needs to be amended.

european countries formerly occupied by the russians quickly adopted the European Convention on Human Rights Protocol 6 and abolished the death penalty in peacetime.^

to join the EU those same countries were required to amend their constitutions to conform to ECHR Protocol 13 which abolished the death penalty under all circumstances.

^ except Belarus which is still strongly alligned with Russia. unless you are a university architecture student interested in the uglyist Stalinist design with sh!tty plumbing (put your poop smeared teepee in the basket not in the toilet) stay away from Belarus.

your veins don't collapse because you smoked for decades and have COPD. He's got something else going on (diabetes?).

Secondly, if someone stabs me over and over for 30 minutes, I doubt that I would be responsible for my actions. As a kid, my urologist learned that the hard way when he came at me with a big needle without warning. He got a nice gash in his head from an overhead x-ray for that.

If this doesn't constitute cruel and unusual punishment, I just don't know what does anymore.

Then was accused of committing several armed robberies. Was arrested. Escaped from custody and took the sherrif's gun. Carjacked an 18 y/o and his truck. Kept the kid in the truck for several hours. Shot the teen in the head twice.

Mohr, head of Ohio state correctional system, says they're "in no rush" to execute Campbell. Delays execution until 2019.

What do you think the chances are the state hopes Campbell either wins legal battles to stop his execution or dies before the 2019 execution date.

January 2019...I think he just didn't wanna be where the buck stops at the next botched attempt at killing this killer, if the condemned doesn't die or get a reprieve from the needle before then.

People accidentally and peacefully die from touching fentanyl.  You can take large doses of opiates and die peacefully.
Funny how the people who support medically supervised right to die have found many humane ways to do it, as have veterinarians for animals, but no one can for death row inmate.  You just give a really large dose of an opiate by injection and they drift off in bliss.
