The Virus Strikes Twice

The Lancet has an article about a 25 year old man in Nevada who tested positive for COVID-19 in April and recovered but then at the end of May, he was infected again. He did not have any serious underlying conditions and there were no indications his immune system was compromised. But on May 28, he felt sick and on May 31 he got tested, and his test was positive. hThis time his symptoms were more severe.

We present, to our knowledge, the first North American case of reinfection with SARS-CoV-2. A 25-year-old man, who was a resident of Washoe County in the US state of Nevada, had laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection in April, 2020, followed by secondary infection within a period of around 6 weeks, in June, 2020. The second infection was symptomatically more severe than the first. Genomic analysis showed the two viral agents were genetically distinct. The patient's immune reaction in vitro was not assessed and, thus, conclusions cannot be made about the duration or degree of immunity.

The Lancet reports that at least 4 people have been reinfected. Does this man immunity Herd does not exist or individual immunity is not be a sure thing (unless you are a contestant on Survivor)? [More...]

Thus, previous exposure to SARS-CoV-2 does not necessarily translate to guaranteed total immunity. The implications of reinfections could be relevant for vaccine development and application. From a public health perspective, all individuals—whether previously diagnosed or not—must take identical precautions to prevent infection with SARS-CoV-2. Further work is needed to assess immune reactions in vitro after reinfection.

In other words, no one knows yet. Safest bet: Wear a mask, wash your hands, don't hang out in groups, avoid millenials who as a group don't seem to give a sh*t (in my neck of the woods anyway) and stay home as much as possible. If you can work from home, do so. If you're unemployed and need money, check out local resources and learn a new trade online. If you don't have to work, take an online class. Is it easy? No, but it's better than dying of COVID.

survived infection, hasn't actually been proved yet, it's mostly theoretical. as well, the original virus has probably evolved into a newer strain, which you have no anti-bodies to fight it off with. it's why we get a flu vaccine every year.

basically, at this point, as you note, we're kind of screwed.

    The key sentence, which explains a lot, is: (5.00 / 3) (#4)
by scribe on Thu Oct 15, 2020 at 09:46:53 AM EST
" Genomic analysis showed the two viral agents were genetically distinct."

In other words, he had a case of Virus #1, got over it, and then got a case of Virus #2 a month or so later.

Going back at least 4 or 5 months, there have been a number of reports in various media (mostly in Europe) to the effect that the coronavirus had either mutated or that there were a couple closely related strains running around.

So, just like we all get colds repeatedly because the common cold virus is not one but rather many different, closely-related viruses, the same seems true with Cousin Corona.

It's hard to sort through the reports and articles.  There was one a week or two ago which tried to correlate or drew a connection between (on the one hand) how severe a patient's symptoms turn out to (on the other) how much Neanderthal DNA that person has. (Gene studies and such suggest pretty uniformly that most of us seem to have some.  It's said NFL linebackers ... no, just kidding about the linebackers.)

Right now, a lot of what's going on at least in the public, non-scientific press, is drawing connections like we do constellations in the sky from a whole bunch of points of light.

    Wash your hands.

by KeysDan on Thu Oct 15, 2020 at 09:22:15 PM EST
defeats Trump he will have made his most significant contribution to the country.  He could retire shorty thereafter and enjoy a legacy of saving the country.  The state of the Union is so fraught, A peaceful reclamation of democracy and the rule of law will put him up there with Abe Lincoln. If this statement seems to be hyperbole, we just need to contemplate what would remain of the nation with four more years of Trump, and Ivanka following him.

However, I have a moderate to high level of confidence that a Biden/Harris Administration will be progressive, if for no other reason that restoring Trump damage will necessitate substantive governmental action.  And, the prospects are good for filling Cabinet and other key posts with well-qualified appointments.  And, then there is the re-balancing of the SC.

Many voters are still living with the fantasy of bipartisanship and can't we just all get along.  Biden's speaking to this is a worry, but, hopefully, it is speaking to an ideal while recognizing the reality.

He thinks he is dealing with an honorable group of people.  IMO there is no Elected or Selected Republican with any honor anymore.  Every single one in every branch of government (including Judicial) at every level needs to go.  They party has been turned into a cult by using the media and their money to dupe the American electorate.

IF Biden puts one Republican in his cabinet he is a fool and has not been paying attention for the last 40+ years.  Regan introduced the GOP as cult, Gingrich solidified it with his drive for a solid non-partisan voting block, and Trump has cemented it into place.  The GOP needs to be rebuilt from the ground up... and really we just need a NEW second party.
