Play It Again

by TChris

Pearl Jam joins Neil Young, the Dixie Chicks, and the Rolling Stones with a song of protest.

World Wide Suicide, already frying the airwaves with indignation, is a stormy anti-war rant tailor-made for Eddie Vedder's howling rasp.

Here's a review of the album. (Update: Alert readers called attention to the omission of Pink's protest song. If you've heard other recent protest songs, feel free to list them in the comments.)

Speaking of protest songs, here's two interesting articles about the evil and seditious Spanish-language Star Spangled Banner. FACT CHECK: U.S. Government Commissioned Spanish-Language 'Star-Spangled Banner' in 1919 And then this, which really says it all...
After saying he did not consider the anthem sung in Spanish to have the same value as the anthem sung in English, Mr. Bush said: "I think people who want to be a citizen of this country ought to learn English. And they ought to learn to sing the anthem in English."
When visiting cities like Chicago, Milwaukee or Philadelphia, in pivotal states, he would drop in at Hispanic festivals and parites, sometimes joining in singing "The Star-Spangled Banner" in Spanish, sometimes partying with a "Viva Bush" mariachi band flown in from Texas.
Who wants to throw the first stone at this vile traitor? PPJ? ;-)

You fail to mention the song that is BY FAR the best of the recent protest songs: DEAR MR PRESIDENT by Pink.

Ya gotta check out Greenday if you want protest songs - most probably know "American Idiot" ( dont want to be an... ) "Holiday" ( same cd ) is even better... " Zeig heil to the President Gasman Bombs away is your punishment..." and... you can dance to it!

Nice tunes, but all preaching to the converted. Crossing over, being able to dialogue with the opposition is a much greater feat than singing "protest" songs to a group of fans already on your side. Don't get me wrong, I like the music, I'm just not as sold on the greatness of it. Greatness and genius are rare. Pop bands telling their fans things (yes, even political) they already agree with is common. But again, at this point in time it's better than songs about chicks and booze and fun. How much better, I guess we'll find out. [DISCLAIMER: Eddie Vedder sociopath'd one of my dear friends, so I have a hard time jumping on his bandwagon.]

Scar, Let me take a crack at it. Being bi-lingual and singing it in Spanish is not the same thing as ought to "learn it in English". He no doubt would sing off key and probably misunderestimate the meaning, but he arguably does know it in Engish. So I guess singing it in Spanish is not a traitorous act. IMO. Living in a foreign language country must be difficult. Visiting is hard enough with my limited skills. I think encouraging immigrants to learn our language is important. Hell, I went to Ireland and couldn't understand half of what they said. Funny story...I ordered a cup of coffee and the cashier said, "One Farty." I knew what a quid, a pence and a euro was, but for the life of me couldn't figure out what a "farty" was. So I stood there with a confused look on my face and finally handed her a buck and a quarter, and she said, "It's farty." Finally, I had to admit I didn't know what she was saying, and he said, "You know, twenty, thirdy, farty." I got it, gave her another euro and left with red cheeks.

Don't forget Bright Eyes singing "When the President Talks to God". We got coldcocked by that one.

That brogue can be tough Pat...I was working a construction job one time with an Irish foreman (maybe an illegal?)...nearly got fired because I could hardly understand a word he said.

Now is the perfect time for Al Queda to make a record. Perhaps Al Zarqawi can belt out some Jihad tunes with sublimial messages...What Difference does it make between Neil Young and Al Zarqawi they both preach the same message that Bush thinks he's god. At least they all share one thing in common, That's Good News.

Hmm, okay. But if, say, Bush had somebody sing the Anthem in Spanish at his inauguration... surely that would be treason? Or, at the very least, hypocritical? Look, he's even crossing his heart for this bastardization of Freedom... Anyway, point is, the other day people acted like songs have magical powers and it can be good magic or bad magic depending on which language they're sung in. Now everyone seems to be backing away. Wonder why... heh-indeedy.

I prefer Dennis Leary's "As*hole", even if it's not a protest song, it could be about this entire administration. I use public toilets And I piss on the seat I walk around in the summertime Sayin' "How about this heat" 'Cause I'm as As*hole

And then there is a band called Godsmacked. #1 on some charts. Here is an interview with the band. It is hilarious, and enraging at the same time. They do not seem too bright. fdl
Godsmacked currently has the #1 album on the chart.  Their song Awake has been used for there years by the military for recruiting commercials, and they recently signed another contract for three years for the use of the song Sick of Life.
