Glenn Greenwald, Marcy Wheeler and mcjoan have been all over Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey over a phantom phone call Mukasey has been referencing in arguing for telecom immunity in FISA. Greenwald reports a major development:

I just received the following statement from the Vice Chairman of the 9/11 Commission, Rep. Lee Hamilton, in response to my inquiries last week (and numerous follow-up inquiries from readers here) about Attorney General Michael Mukasey's claims about the 9/11 attack and, specifically, about Mukasey's story that there was a pre-9/11 telephone call from an "Afghan safe house" into the U.S. that the Bush administration failed to intercept or investigate:

I am unfamiliar with the telephone call that Attorney General Mukasey cited in his appearance in San Francisco on March 27. The 9/11 Commission did not receive any information pertaining to its occurrence.

Mukasey has some splainin' to do.

    Somethng we can agree on! I know there are hundreds of things we prob. agree on, and I know you could prob. care less that I agree or not but this is ridiculous! This administration has mis-lead Americans so much that anything that comes from their mouth is suspect. Telecom immunity is not going to stop terrorists or make us safer. Mukasey should either show proof of this call or step down! Exagerations and outright lies will not help us defeat terrorists. This once again shows that Bush is unable to appoint any independent thinking people, and fabrcations are okay coming from the ATTORNEY GENERAL! The one position that should symbolize truth and justice in this country. The mess at DOJ will epitomize Bushs presidency and prove that he is in fact the worst leader this country has ever had!

    There is no reason to assume that Mukasey did not tell the truth.

    but I don't expect Mukasey will be explaining his comment in a way that will answer the questions it raised.  I still shake my head in disbelief that the Democrats voted to confirm him.  A full read of his written answers to questions after his testimony before the SJC indicated he had little intention of acting independently of the executive branch.

    ...like the rest of this administration won't be explaining anything to anybody unless he (ha-ha) gets a subpoena. So, did he misremember something he thinks he read in some document somewhere, or did he just flat out lie?

    I mean that sincerely.  I never expected Mukasey to challenge the administration or be any great AG, but he generally had a reputation as an honorable guy.  His waterboarding tango was not a good sign, but now to throw away a reputation built over a lifetime and for what?

    So how many people have been willing to ruin their reputations for this Administration?  It's truly shocking.

    Who said it didn't happen?  Didn't you see that episode of 24 where they were able to prevent a terrorist plot by intercepting a call from a terrorist safe house?  

    Those of you "in what we call the reality-based community," who "believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality." may not understand Mukasey. However keep in mind that for the Bush administration "That's not the way the world really works anymore. We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality."
