Monday Photos From the Big Tent and Pepsi Center

Am I the only one who got a picture of Frank Sinatra's wife Barbara Marx? I took it at the Huffington Post Oasis today at the Big Tent site. (Added: It's Barbara Marx Hubbard.)

On to the Pepsi Center.[More...]

  • A crowd walking to the Pepsi Center
  • A crowd inside the lobby of the Pepsi Center
  • The CNN crew on the floor of the Pepsi Center (Wolf Blitzer, Anderson Cooper, James Carville, * Gloria B.)
  • A kind of blurry picture I took of CNN analyst Paul Begala whom I ran into in the stairwell at the Pepsi Center. He graciously agreed to be photographed for TalkLeft. (Sorry I'm not a better photographer Paul, you look much better in person.)
  • Dee Dee Myers (who didn't know I was taking her picture.) She is very animated when she talks so it was hard to get a good photo.
  • A Hillary supporter inside the Pepsi Center.
  • The crowd watching the proceedings on a big screen tv at the outdoor cafe at the CNN Grill room (the best location, usually home to Brooklyn's)

Unfortunately, the picture I took of Theresa Heinz Kerry who was next to me as we exited the Pepsi Center came out a big blur. She even stopped so I could take it, I'm really disappointed. Here's what I got.

We didn't forget the cops today. The TL kid says there was a little to-do outside his office at 16th & Broadway and he sent in these photos:

On a personal note: My pal Marty (who also is part of my and the TL kid's extended family) is volunteering in the blogger lounge at the Pepsi Center. (She can take your Hall pass and exchange it for a floor pass for a half hour.)

  • Here's a picture of Marty and me.
  • Also in the TL kid's extended family is Denver sportscaster Les Shapiro. Here he is with Marty.

Back soon with my impressions and (hopefully) some video from the floor of the Pepsi Center and other areas.

Haha, no way is that coincidental.

I'm actually on a couple mailing lists where people discuss PUMAs, and Google always makes ads for Puma shoes pop up in my sidebar.

Especially the one of you and Marty.

That's great you got a shot of Barbara Marx! She used to be married to Zeppo (Herbert) who I always thought was a very handsome guy.

For posting this and giving us an insider's glance.  Especially for those of us (ok, well, me) don't even have Cable TV.

On a side note, am I the only one who is no longer interested in hearing these words: meme, gaffe or the phrase "under the bus"?

Context aside - these actual words and phrases and giving me headaches...

    My least favorite 2008 cliche (5.00 / 1) (#12)
by lobary on Tue Aug 26, 2008 at 01:26:41 AM EST
Thrown under the bus is up there, way up there, but the one that's driving me bonkers is "that said" (or any derivation of same).

Yes, I've used it a time or twelve myself, but no more. Seems I can't read anything on the internet or watch the cable gabbers without getting hit in the face with this annoying phrase about eighteen times a day.

Er, you already said it, so why remind me that you did?!!?

    (Sorry for the OT rant)

drinking the Kool-Aide, and all the petty names that have been created for the opponents. Hillary is not petty, and I am pretty sure she doesn't refer to anyone as Obambi, McSame, etc. I would like to see her supporters show the Obama supporters the dignity of their candidate.

The cops look to be a bit at loose ends, don't they?  Maybe some protesters will take pity on them and stage a mock uprising so they can practice.

I know most folks are interested in the pics of big name people, but if you have a chance for some plain ol' shots of Denver, I'd be happy to see those, too.  I've never been, and don't have a good fix on what the city itself is like.

you look fantastic in those pictures. And when you said THK's picture was blurry you weren't kidding. Maybe you'll run into her again and can get her picture.

    Jeralyn, use your Mino. (5.00 / 1) (#26)
by Iphie on Tue Aug 26, 2008 at 10:51:31 AM EST
Coincidentally, I bought a Mino on the same day you did. I've been playing around with it and it is ridiculously easy -- something it does well (and easily) is to grab single frames -- if you had used it to film THK when she walked by, you probably would have been able to get a pretty decent single frame from it. You might pick up some interesting conversation as well. I haven't used it long enough to know how well it holds its charge, so depending on how much running around you're doing -- it might not be perfect, but I look forward to videos!

a fascination with most of the photographed celebrities.

Dee Dee Myers became a huge disappointment when she fed that trash to her husband about Bill on the campaign trail and he published it in Vanity Fair.

I will always admire the great things Ted Kennedy has done for the elderly and the poor in this country. I'm not sure he's watching this process, though, or what the end game is hoping to achieve. I don't see Obama's plan as one that mirrors, or continues the great work the Kennedy's have done.

Same here. Dee Dee Meyers (none / 0) (#31)
by bridget on Tue Aug 26, 2008 at 03:31:01 PM EST
turned out to be a huge disappointment - after liking and supporting her for so many years I feel completely fooled by another Dem whose career was made thanks to Bill Clinton. One can't help wondering what the Clintons must be thinking. Again. The DDM thing Sort of reminds me of the Susan Estrich turnaround. Follow the $$$ I say.

Huffington a Dem celebrity at the Dem comvention 2008?  Can it get any weirder than that? I Have never been fooled by AH and never will. So I will spare everyone my AH stories going back all the way to 1992 ...

ITA there is absolutely no connection between the Kennedys and Obama but both parties decided to write this screenplay together (e.g.Caroline K. so inspired by Obama after all that time etc.etc.) and now we are watching the movie unfold. Except it is not working for me. For others like the tweeties it obviously does.

Wow, the size of 'crowd walking to the Pepsi Ctr' (none / 0) (#17)
by andrys on Tue Aug 26, 2008 at 03:56:23 AM EST
... that was such a nice size that I felt I was actually there.

The one of Dee Dee actually turned out well, I thought.

It's nice to see non-canned pictures.  I'm watching the convention in high def for the first time ... well I'm not sure that was around 4 years ago to the extent it is now.  CNN is in hi-def.  MSNBC is not like watching news - it's more like watching a propaganda station so I just couldn't stay with it.  Like you, CNN was on the floor and that was fun to watch, even if not much was happening at any given time.  I taped some of it, as I was watching on std tv in the computer room more and that room doesn't get CNN for some reason.

Kennedy - that was powerful.  Can't imagine dry eyes there.  What a speaker he is.  It was good to see he has the energy to really send his voice out in that singing way.

Do you have a way of setting your ISO ?  If so, you might  choose at least 400 or 800 or hi-iso when light is not good or when you're indoors, since your flash isn't on.  That higher ISO will have the shutter not stay open so long which is causing  your impressionism style there!

Thanks for sharing these with us, including you enjoying the convention.  Fun to see.

always looks like a kid in a candy store. That charming madman really gets me giddy.

I couldn't see any photo of "Barbara Marx" [link is MIA] but as soon as I saw mention of Frank Sinatra I felt like plopping in a CD from the box set and um...I really did. I'm listening to "The Coffee Song" right now.

What if the PUMAS remade that song and replaced Brazillians with "Democrats" and Coffee with "Kool-Aid"? ha ha

    J, some photo tips. (none / 0) (#29)
by sarcastic unnamed one on Tue Aug 26, 2008 at 01:08:33 PM EST
I'm no pro, but what I've learned over the years is to relax, concentrate keeping the camera steady, and squeeeeeze the shutter button - don't jerk it. Especially pics at night or in dark areas because the shutter will be open longer than in bright light, and therefor if your camera or your subject moves, you'll get blurred pics.

See if your camera has a multiple picture option - iow, it'll keep taking photos as long as you're pressing the shutter button. That way, out of the 5 or 10 pics you get in one blast, at least one should come out OK.

    Keep up the good work!

Or, if you have a digital "video" cam, (none / 0) (#30)

use that. You can go in and pull out single frames after.
