Mitt Speaks

A condensation of Mitt Romney's convention speech:

Liberals are bad. Ronald Reagan and John McCain and Sarah Palin are good. George Bush goes unmentioned.

Drilling is good. Al Gore is bad.

Republicans believe there is good and evil in the world. Islam is evil. So is Barack Obama.

Republicans prefer straight talk to politically correct talk. In other words, we make fun of anyone who isn't straight.

I'm proud to be an American even though I'm not wearing a flag pin on my lapel.

I have to hand it to Mitt, I would have busted up giving that speech.

Wait, don't tell me.  Since 1980?  Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush... I give, I don't know.

speech about how "they" meaning we are suppressing American initiative (all paraphrased) with our social programs like Medicaid.  If I was in the Obama camp, I'd mae sure to include that clip in an ad.

Mike Huckabee is on now saying that he wasn't waiting for the government to rescue him.

I think these guys really are completely out of touch.

Normally, they are better at this thing of convincing people to vote against their own best interest than what I am hearing tonight.

    Huck's pretty convincing, imo (5.00 / 1) (#15)

but he thankfully did make some serious gaffes during the primaries that for the time being have relegated him to second-tier on the national stage.

But it is important to understand that talk about pulling one's self up by your boot straps works well when everyone is reasonably comfortable - it does NOT, however, do all that well when people aren't feeling like they have a firm grasp on their bootstraps.

That's why I said they were out of touch.  I really don't think that the decision-makers in the GOP really understand how tenuous on the economic front life seems to be from the perspective of most Americans right now.

They were criticized for saying nothing about the economy last night and now Mitt and Huck address it by going to the old GOP stand-bys about self-reliance.  They miss the boat entirely imo.

night was get to know John night. Which they also did with Obama. The meat is served the second night and forward.

I see Huck as one of those that you may not agree with, but he's real likable. So he would get votes even if he seemed a tad out of touch. I think he would be a hoot to have a beer with, lol!~

Gave a perfectly awful speech.  He really is in an 80's bubble and wants to see America repeat the Reagan years.  Doesn't the McCain campaign preview these speeches before they are given?  They can't possibly believe the talking points from the Reagan, Bush and Lesser Bush years are winners, can they?  Do Republicans really want more "Mourning in America"?

I'm finding Huckabee's speech to be pretty blah as well.

His anecdote about the teacher was silly.  2 minute build to tell us that a teacher wasted an entire day to make a political point?  Even the crowd seemed fairly unimpressed.

The only hits he had were when he said he became a Republican because he didn't want the government to do it for him and when he compared Sarah Palin's vote totals in Wasilla to Joe Biden's vote totals running for President.

Of course the fact that Huckabee was flat wrong on that probably won't mean much.

I guess the crowd is amped up for Palin but they really don't seem that fired up.  Seems like a striking difference when compared to the 2004 convention.  Matter of fact I would say the parties have reversed in enthusiasm.

more votes as Wasilia mayor than Biden got in the primaries.

I know that can't be true, but it's this kind of derisive humor that the Dems need to get better at.
