My most admired men and women (5.00 / 8) (#4)

are those who toil in obscurity, some working multiple jobs to make ends meet, who endeavor to carve out time for their kids, stay connected to the schools and teachers, who hardly ever go to bed at night without one worry or another.  These are people who care for elderly parents, and try not to worry about their own futures and who will take care of them when they wear out.

There's almost no time for people like this to stop and enjoy life, to look up from the grindstone and feel relaxed and happy - and it pains me that there seems to be little interest in how much people are sacrificing in terms of quality of life just to get from one day to the next.

I don't mean to suggest that someone like Hillary doesn't deserve admiration for her work, but gosh - she and so many others have so many advantages, they don't worry about money or being able to afford to take their kids to the doctor, about losing a job if they have to take time off for illness, about paying the rent or the mortgage.  She's done much over her career to help people improve their lives - and I frankly think her talents would be better applied to these areas.

There are many men and women working hard at the grassroots level to help improve the lives of others - who establish food pantries and soup kitchens for those who don't have enough to eat, who set up after-school programs for kids, who run sports programs, who provide respite care for those who are caring for parents or other family members, who volunteer in libraries and hospitals and schools, who run literacy programs and drive cancer patients to treatments.

These are the men and women I admire.

    Not one.

I admire my son.  He made it through many physical and emotional events, none for which he was responsible. He is the finest man I know.

The everyday women and men who, through no fault of their own, have borne the brunt of sacrifice for stupid public and private policy.

    My son's teacher this year (5.00 / 2) (#10)

She is an excellent teacher too, just off the charts excellent.  When her husband was killed in a car crash she had a four year old daughter, a one year old daughter, and was pregnant with her third.

She never remarried either, raised her daughters herself and her oldest teaches at the school with her now.  The youngest is in high school and comes in and helps out in class all the time.  They are so gorgeous too along with self esteem and educations.  The oldest did some volunteer tutoring when she was in college too and became close to a little girl who had lost both of her parents and was in the foster system.  The whole family created such a bond with this child that she is allowed to stay with them during the holidays now and may eventually come to be the fifth female family member if all goes well.  They are an amazing family.

how about "net admired" (none / 0) (#15)
by diogenes on Tue Dec 28, 2010 at 10:30:40 AM EST
If 22 percent admire you and forty percent hate you, how can you be most admired?  Hillary is "most admired" by 17%.  These numbers are minor pluralities.
If 23% most admired Rush Limbaugh and 18% most admired Sarah Palin, then the Washington Post would have consigned this type of survey to the dustbin where it belongs rather than trumpet that Rush and Sarah were the most admired man and woman in America.

... modifier to indicate the superlative form of an adjective ("admired"), not as an adjective itself to claim that any of those people are admired by a majority.

It's like saying - correctly - that vanilla is the most popular flavor of ice cream.  There are many different flavors, so no ice cream gets close to a majority, but at 29%, vanilla is the most popular flavor.

But I guess that upsets some people who hate vanilla ...
