Thursday Open Thread: Hangover Edition

Did any of you wake up today and say, "This must be a nightmare, this can't be happening?" I sure did.

Late Night Show Hosts react to Trump. I'm sure everyone has their favorite, and you all know mine, and he did not disappoint.

Even his pitch at the end asking everyone to be nice to each other, including those who voted differently than we did, did not call for unity with political opponents on political issues, which I very much appreciated. He kept it human, devoid of politics. (Keep in mind, he's British and has only lived here a few years, he can't vote.)

On legalizing marijuana, James and Reggie are at their best.

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

During Saturday’s Democratic presidential debate, the liberal documentary filmmaker tweeted, “I love Hillary. I do. But how can we vote for her? After what she did in taking us to war? Who doesn’t believe she’d do it again?”

Now admittedly, as we got closer to election day his public statements were more careful and supportive, but an argument could be made he was a Bernie or buster for a bit.  As evidenced by the initial post, obviously the man has some influence on young white voters.

And the numbers are still not final, after all.  The Election Project is updating numbers, as they come in -- and reports that turnout actually was higher than in 2012.

So, let's remember that a lot of numbers now are being compared with final numbers for previous elections.  Ripened apples vs. orange blossoms.

And the numbers still are not final, especially from the largest city in my state.  The margin was so narrow that there are enough uncounted ballots to trigger an automatic recount.

Family Research Council, Heritage Foundation and NOM, are excited about the Trump win.  They look forward to Trump moving against LGBT people on many fronts, such as so-called religious liberty laws that give the right, for example, to refuse to bake for gays; appoint Supreme Court justices who will reverse Obergefell (marriage equality); rescind President Obama's executive actions protecting LGBT people; remove protections for trans people. These goals are a part of the Republican platform on which Trump ran.

What scares me is that I am still not sure what Trump really wants and am not even sure that he does.  One thing I heard is that during the campaign, Trump's favorite companion was his son in law, Jared Kushner, age 35, whose soft voice was said to soothe the candidate.  At one time, Kushner was a Democrat.  If he is appointed a presidential advisor, his views, whatever they are, may be very influential.

met at the White House today.  The president, of course, was gracious. Trump was, as CNN reported, constrained--which may mean Trump did not demand Obama's birth certificate. Trump was nice, saying it was great meeting the president.

If Trump wants amends he should start by honoring the president by announcing that he wants Merrick Garland to be Supreme Court associate justice and will expect the Senate to confirm him, acknowledging that Republicans should have acted on the president's nomination, noting that he, like the president, are elected to four-year terms.

This morning, a Trump supporter literally chased me down the street screaming obscenities at me. There was a "Hillary for Prison sign" attached to the speed limit sign in my neighborhood. So I stopped to see if I could take it down or whether I needed to call VDOT. He came barreling out of his house toward me, yelling the F-word, screaming that the sign was private property (despite being attached to a speed limit sign and clearly on public property) and calling me some lovely choice words. Frightened, I got in my car and locked the door and he came up the window, looking like he was going to do some serious damage to my car. I drove off and he literally ran into the street running behind my car chasing me. I reported it to the police and have called VDOT to take down the sign.

Shortly after that, as I walked to get a cup of coffee with a colleague, we saw a swastika spray painted on the wall. In Arlington VA. In 2016.

THIS is what frightens me about the Trump win. Not Trump himself. Not Republicans being in power. None of that. In his quest to win, Trump's words of anger and divisiveness unleashed a horrible monster of hatred in our country. He has emboldened every racist, bigot, angry American to unleash their hatred. I desperately pray that our nation can find peace and love and understanding and tolerance.

Hillary Clinton did not deserve what happened to her during this campaign. There will come a time in the hopefully not-so-distant future, when people will reassess her performance much more favorably, the same way they eventually did of Helen Gahagan Douglas's 1950 CA Senate campaign against Richard Nixon. Like Trump, Nixon won the race by going very ugly and earning the political epithet "Tricky Dick" from her in the process, which stuck with him until his dying day.
